BATON ROUGE, LA — The high-stakes world of LSU football claimed its latest victim on Sunday, as the university announced the firing of Head Coach Brian Kelly midway through his fourth season. The stunning move, which follows a humiliating 49-25 loss to No. 3 Texas A&M, triggers a colossal buyout and immediately vaults the LSU job to the top of the college football coaching carousel.
Kelly’s tenure was defined by a single, unforgiving truth: at LSU, success is only measured by national championships.
The Final Straw: A Collapse in Death Valley
Kelly, 64, was lured away from Notre Dame in 2021 with a decade-long, million contract and the explicit expectation of leading the Tigers to multiple national titles. While his overall record was a respectable 34-14, his inability to contend at the highest level ultimately sealed his fate.
The 2025 season began with high hopes, including a 4-0 start, but it spiraled into disaster with three losses in the last four games—all in the SEC. Saturday night’s loss to Texas A&M was the breaking point. The Tigers squandered an 18-14 halftime lead, getting outscored 35-7 in the second half. By the end of the blowout, chants of “Fire Kelly!” were echoing throughout Tiger Stadium.
- The Unforgivable Trend: Kelly never led LSU to the College Football Playoff in the first three seasons, and the loss to the Aggies officially ended any hope for the expanded 12-team field this year. For a program where the three preceding coaches all won national titles, a ceiling of 10 wins and no CFP appearances was deemed unacceptable.
- The On-Field Reversal: In a bitter irony, the defense—which had received a massive influx of talent from the No. 1 transfer portal class—struggled to keep pace this season, while the offense, previously a strength under Heisman winner Jayden Daniels, averaged its fewest points since 2009.
The $50 Million Price of Standards
The cost of parting with Kelly is staggering. LSU will owe the veteran coach a buyout of more than million, making it the second-most expensive coaching buyout in college football history, surpassed only by Jimbo Fisher’s 2023 exit from Texas A&M.
LSU Athletic Director Scott Woodward, who made the splashy hire of Kelly in 2021, acknowledged the painful reality: “Ultimately, the success at the level that LSU demands simply did not materialize… I will not compromise in our pursuit of excellence, and we will not lower our standards.”
Associate Head Coach and Running Backs Coach Frank Wilson has been named the interim head coach for the remainder of the season.
The National Search Begins
The LSU opening instantly becomes the most attractive job on the market, joining Penn State, Florida, and others in a hectic coaching cycle. With unparalleled resources and a history of championship success, the Tigers are expected to target another big-name hire.
Names already circulating in industry reports include Lane Kiffin (Ole Miss), Dan Lanning (Oregon), and Joe Brady (Buffalo Bills Offensive Coordinator), the architect of the 2019 national championship team.
The clock is now ticking for Woodward to find the leader who can immediately return the Tigers to the pinnacle of college football.
