There was a lot to like about opening day at the Heights. Boston College rolled up 555 yards of total offense, 458 of those yards through the air. They had 26 first downs on the day and 34 minutes in time of possession, nine more than the Fordham Rams. If there was one stat that did stick out in the 66-10 win, it would be a running game that only produced 97 yards. You might think that the BC offensive line would be able to open big holes for their running backs to run through. However, last Saturday was about a passing game that was on point all day long.
Dylan Lonergan’s first start as an Eagle’s QB was solid. In three quarters of work, he was 26-of-34 for 264 yards and four touchdowns. A pretty good introduction to Eagles Nation. His favorite target was Lewis Bond, who had very little trouble getting open against the Rams’ secondary. He finished his day with 11 catches for 138 yards. Lonergan also showed a willingness to spread the ball around to eleven different receivers with at least one catch. Three of them were touchdown catches. The offensive line did a great job of giving Lonergan time to look downfield and find open receivers. The best news of all: no turnovers. Even Grayson James saw time in the fourth and took advantage. James was a perfect 5-for-5 for 190 yards and a touchdown. Saturday was a good day to be a BC quarterback.
Not to be outdone. The Eagles’ defense had their moments, too. Eight tackles for losses, three QB sacks (Daveron Crouch had one of those sacks), as well as an interception, which he returned for 28 yards. Six tackles, five of them unassisted, and one tackle for a loss. Mr. Crouch had a full day. Carter Davis and Micah Amedee had the other picks on the day. Bottom line is. Lots of players got a chance to play, and when their number was called, they did their job.
Now the Eagles take their act on the road for the first time in 2025. A nationally televised game at Michigan State. They opened their season last Friday night in front of 71,657 at Spartan Stadium. The 24-6 win over Western Michigan was settled in the first half by three touchdowns scored by the home team. While BC’s running game had its problems, the same can not be said for the Spartans. They ran for 181 yards, led by sophomore running back Makhi Frazier with 103 yards on 14 carries and a score. Another sophomore back, Brandon Tullis, had 52 yards on the ground with a score. For the game, Michigan State gained 336 yards of offense.
On defense, the Sparters held Western Michigan to just 29 yards on 24 rushing attempts. They found themselves in the backfield a lot with four QB sacks and 12 tackles for losses. They held the Broncos’ offense scoreless for the night. Western’s lone score came from the defense on a late interception in the fourth quarter. Michigan State loves to play at home on Friday nights. They are now 11-0 on Friday night to start the season, and 13-0 overall on Friday night. The Eagles should be happy they are playing on Saturday night instead.
Boston College is 5-1-1 vs Michigan State. The last time these two programs met was September 21, 2024, and the Eagles were 23-19 winners at Alumni Stadium. Michigan State’s last win was back on September 30, 1995, a 25-21 win. The Spartans have lost the last two in a row. Game time is set for 7:30 PM on NBC.
