It is great to know that football is back, and it starts on Friday nights with high school football. As for the Pinellas Park High School Patriot, that meant the start of their season. Many thought that with the typical rain showers that Florida gets every afternoon at this time of the year, the game might be canceled. The game did not get cancelled, and the fans and parents showed up and showed out. The Patriots took the field in their all-red uniforms with white helmets. Their opponents for the first game of the 2025 season were the Largo Packers. The Packers also had fans attend and kept cheering when they hit the field. Largo came on their road in white tops, blue pants, and white helmets. As each of the team’s captains headed towards the middle of the field for the coin toss.
As the head official flipped the coin, the Pinellas Park Patriots won the toss and deferred to the second half. After the rain, it got very humid, which showed on the players as the game went on. The fans sat down and were excited as the season got underway, as Omar Saucedo put toe to leather. The Packers did not have a very successful opening drive that ended in a punt. That is where the first mistake would happen for the Patriots, as there would be an interception that would be returned nearly for a touchdown. Pinellas Park got so momentum early on as they did not allow Largo to get a touchdown and took over on downs at the one-yard line. The next play was the first scoring of the game as the Packers tackled the Patriots’ running back in the endzone, resulting in a safety.
That would give the Packers an early 2-0 lead. The Patriots would recover and drive down the field, resulting in a Saucedo field goal. This would give the lead to Pinellas Park in which they would never relinquish. After they took a 3-2 lead on the next kickoff, the Packers would fumble the return, and Pinellas Park would recover. After the turnover, they drove down and got their first touchdown of the season. That would give them a 10-2 lead. Yet another turnover would lead to the Packers’ only touchdown of the game on a pick six,x and drew the score to 10-8 because they missed the extra point. On the extra point, there was a misfire that messed everything up. Remember, the humidity would affect players on both sides as the game was delayed many times due to players suffering from cramps.
The game was sloppy for both teams. But that will come to be expected, being that it was the first game of the season for both teams. The game could have been won by the Packers, as once again they had a pick-six. Unfortunately, this time, they committed a costly penalty for roughing the passer. This would give the Patriots a chance to take the victory formation and seal the game. And for the first time in three years, they beat the Largo Packers. One of the biggest plays of the game came from Quinton O’Driscoll with a huge quarterback sack that ended the last drive for Largo. Other standout players for the Patriots were Nate Vega and Anthony Roman, just to name a few. The final score was 10-8, giving the Patriots a 1-0 record to start the season.
