The Boston College baseball team had its fair share of ups and downs this past spring. There was a series win on the road at Virginia, and the mini-run the Eagles made in the conference tournament almost gave them a spot in the NCAA Tournament. In the end, the overall record of 28-29 and a home record of 12-11 were not enough to keep their season alive heading into June.
It did not stop a member of the team from being on the radar of MLB scouts. Josiah Ragsdale, who transferred to BC after spending two seasons at Iona, was selected by the Milwaukee Brewers in the seventh round with pick number #215. The junior outfielder, who can wear many hats — including Chicago Cubs hats, as a fan favorite — has shown impressive versatility on and off the field. from Vineland, NJ. hit .319 in his only season with the Eagles. He had an on-base percentage of .410 and a slugging percentage of 500. Ragsdale hit five home runs and knocked in 30 runs.
He produced 10 multi-hit games, five of which were three-hit games. He finished the season with 66 hits, 17 of which were for extra bases. He was a concern on the bases, stealing 30 of them during the year, good for fifth in the conference. While waiting for the draft to take place, Ragsdale was on the Cape playing in the Cape Cod Summer League. In 16 games with the Brewster Whitecaps, Josiah was hitting .373 with 19 hits in 51 at-bats. He had an OPS of .916, which put him in the top 20 of the league, and he was tied for the league lead in stolen bases with 15.
Ragsdale became the third Boston College baseball player to be drafted by the Brewers. In 2021, the organization selected OF Sal Frelick, and in 1989, they took pitcher Tommy Smith. Frelick is a member of the Brewers ballclub, playing right field for the team, batting leadoff for the club. Frelick is hovering around a .300 batting average.
