It is great to see that USF Athletics is continuing to do great. The weather in Florida has never been a problem so for lacrosse, softball, and baseball it has been nice. On occasion, you will see these teams where long sleeves for what a cool day for the state would be. No matter what the weather is, the fans have been showing up. During the first week of March, the Bulls have also hit the road and played road games. Let’s look back at how the lacrosse, softball, and baseball teams did.
Lacrosse
The team had two home games this week at Corbett Stadium on the campus of USF which is used by the soccer team for the Bulls. The first game of the week was against the Towson Tigers. The Bulls fell behind early but tied the game four times but lost 13-12. With 12 goals, USF is averaging 14 goals a game. Even though they lost to the Tigers, the Bulls are still outscoring their opponents 70-52 with a plus-18 in goal differential in their first five games. The following Sunday, they hosted the St. Bonaventure Bonnies and it was much different than the game versus the Tigers. In this game, the Bulls tied a program record for scoring 19 goals. This was the largest margin of victory for the lacrosse team up to this point and it was a nice comeback win.
Softball
The Bulls softball team hit the road to be part of the Longhorn Invitational taking place in Austin, Texas. The other teams in the invitational were the host Texas Longhorns who are the number one team in the country, the New Mexico State Aggies, the Abilene Christian Wildcats, and Alabama A&M Bulldogs. In the end, the only team USF lost to was the Texas Longhorns. In both games, they gave up nine runs but defeated the Aggies, Wildcats, and Bulldogs. Because of their losses to the Longhorns, they lost the tournament. They returned home for two games earlier this week and split the doubleheader. The Saints fell in the first game but won the second game. In the first game the Bulls won 7-1 but only scored one run in the second game and gave up six. They are 17-7 so far this year.
Baseball
The baseball team welcomed their in-state rival the UCF Knights. The “War on I4” is used to be more often than it has recently. The Knights moved to the Big 12 conference with the Bulls still being a part of the AAC. This is the 60th year of USF baseball and Jack Butterfield threw out the ceremonial first pitch in the first game versus UCF. The Bulls had a great game with two players standing out. Corey Braun went six and 1/3 innings striking out a career-high nine hitters and first baseman Sebastian Greico went three for four with six RBI’s. As part of those six RBIs, he hit a three-run home run in the bottom of the fifth inning. All three games in this series ended in seven innings. The Bulls won the first one, but the Knights won the next two.
