A bye week can do wonders for a team, especially when the game before the bye did not go so well. A bad second half at Virginia, which included three turnovers, led to 15 unanswered points by the Cavaliers. It left a bad taste in the mouths of the Boston College Eagles. The 24-14 loss was a game that BC let get away. It was just the third time in program history that BC lost a game that they were ahead by 14 or more points. The bye week was used to correct the things that went wrong in Virginia. It was also used to get ready to make a trip that in the past has been a house of horror for the Eagles.
This Thursday night, Boston College (4-2, 1-1) heads to Blacksburg, West Virginia to take on the Virginia Tech Hokies (3-3, 1-1). How bad has it been for BC when they faced VT? All-Time, the Eagles are 11-20 vs the Hokies, which factors in their time in the Big East. They are 8-10 in regular season games in the ACC. Last season when the two teams met in Chestnut Hill, Virginia Tech came away with the 48-22 win. It also snapped a five-game Eagles winning streak. Boston College’s last win over Virginia Tech was in 2021, their last win in Blacksburg was in 2018. Since joining the ACC, the Eagles are 10-13 following a bye week and 9-11 in league play. On the road, they are 4-5. This will be the second time for BC on Thursday night since their 2018 victory over Wake Forest.
The Hokies come into this game after a convincing 31-7 win over Stanford on the road. They had a 14-0 lead at the half and never looked back. Hokies leading rusher Bhayshul Tuten had 79 yards on 21 carries and a score. He now has 605 yards on the ground this season. QB Kyron Drones was sharp throwing for 201 yards on 14-of-19 passing and two touchdowns. For the season, he has thrown for 1,155 yards. The Hokies defense held the Cardinals offense to 258 total yards on 66 plays. On the defensive side, Kaleb Spencer had five solo tackles, three of them for losses totaling 13 yards.
For Boston College, a player who is starting to create some buzz for himself is DE Donovan Ezeiruaku. He leads all of FBS in sacks with eight solo sacks and sacks per game at 1.6. He is first in the ACC and third in FBS in tackles for loss at 9.5. For the Virginia Tech offensive line, knowing where Ezeiruaku is at all times will be a must.
On Thursday night, a big game for both teams will take place.
