The 2026 Boston Red Sox season had almost everything a baseball fan could ask for. There were unbelievable highs, frustrating lows, dramatic comebacks, and a historic winning streak. However, it ended with another painful loss to the New York Yankees. Boston fell 9-2 to New York on Wednesday night at Yankee Stadium. The Yankees completed a two-game sweep of the American League Wild Card Series. The Red Sox entered the postseason after one of the strangest turnarounds in recent baseball history. Boston started the season 32-46. At that point, the playoffs looked extremely unlikely. Then everything changed. The Red Sox swept the Yankees in a four-game series at Fenway Park. That series started Boston’s remarkable turnaround on June 25.
Boston then went on a 15-game winning streak. That streak tied the franchise record for consecutive victories. The 1946 Red Sox originally established that record. The winning streak eventually ended, but Boston refused to slow down. The Red Sox followed it with another nine-game winning streak. They finished their incredible stretch at 32-5 from June 25 through August 7. That stretch completely changed the story surrounding the team. Instead of discussing the next disappointing season, fans started talking about October baseball. The Red Sox eventually clinched a Wild Card spot. They became the fourth team in MLB history to reach the postseason after falling 14 games below .500. Boston also became the first team to make the playoffs after losing 44 of its first 75 games.
That accomplishment made the season remarkable before the postseason even started. Unfortunately, the final chapter looked nothing like the summer turnaround. The Yankees dominated Boston from the opening pitch of Game 1. New York defeated Boston 9-0 in Tuesday’s opener. Ben Rice hit a grand slam during the Yankees’ offensive explosion. Boston’s offense never found its footing. The Red Sox managed only seven hits across the entire two-game series. They scored just two runs while striking out 18 times. The Yankees, meanwhile, scored 18 runs. They also collected 26 hits during the two games. Game 2 offered Boston one final opportunity.

Sonny Gray started for the Red Sox and kept Boston within striking distance. Gray allowed one run through 4 2/3 innings before manager Chad Tracy removed him. He threw only 70 pitches. Gray strongly disagreed with the decision. He believed he deserved another chance against the Yankees lineup. Gray led qualified American League pitchers with a .180 batting average allowed the third time through an order. That decision became another major talking point after the loss. Boston’s bullpen then allowed the game to completely get away. The Yankees scored six runs during the sixth inning. Cody Bellinger delivered the biggest blow with a three-run homer. Luis García Jr. also played a major role after joining New York during the season.
There was also another strange storyline involving Gray. Images circulated online showing what appeared to be a substance on the pitcher’s neck. Some fans immediately accused Gray of using pine tar or another sticky substance. However, those accusations remain unproven. There was no reported MLB discipline or official finding against Gray following the game. Umpires also did not stop the game over the substance. MLB rules prohibit pitchers from possessing or applying foreign substances to baseballs. Umpires have authority to inspect pitchers during games. Therefore, the images created questions rather than proof of cheating. Gray also did not address the allegations during his postgame comments. Instead, he focused on the disappointment of being removed early.
The veteran right-hander also faces an uncertain offseason. Gray becomes a free agent after the season, and he has recently discussed the possibility of retirement. For Boston, however, the bigger question involves what happens next. The Red Sox showed tremendous resilience during the regular season. They climbed out of a massive hole and earned a postseason opportunity. Yet the Yankees exposed the team’s biggest problems when the stakes became highest. Boston could not generate offense when it mattered most. The bullpen also struggled badly during the Wild Card Series. Meanwhile, injuries and offensive struggles affected the team throughout September. Still, it would be difficult to describe 2026 as an ordinary Red Sox season.
The team looked finished in June. Then Boston produced one of the greatest turnarounds in franchise history. The 15-game winning streak gave Red Sox Nation something to believe in again. The postseason exit erased that excitement quickly. For the second straight year, the Yankees ended Boston’s season. That rivalry will now enter another offseason with plenty of questions. Boston must figure out how to turn its incredible 2026 comeback into sustained postseason success. The Red Sox proved they could recover from adversity. Now they must find a way to avoid another disappointing ending.
