There is nothing better in the game of baseball than having an ace on the pitching staff, and on Friday afternoon at LeLacheur Park, UMass Lowell right-hander Alfred Mucciarone was exactly that. Mucciarone turned in a dominant performance, throwing a complete-game four-hitter with zero walks and seven strikeouts to lead the River Hawks to a 10-1 victory over the Maine Black Bears. It marked the first complete game by a UMass Lowell starter since April 2024 and provided a much-needed spark for a team looking to snap a four-game losing streak. The win moves UMass Lowell to 9-13 overall and 2-2 in conference play, while Maine falls to 3-20.
The stellar outing by Mucciarone was complemented by what head coach Nick Barresse described as “good situational hitting.” The River Hawks offense executed the small details perfectly, recording four sacrifice flies and two sacrifice bunts throughout the game. While they hammered out 16 hits, only three went for extra bases, as the team focused on moving runners and taking the extra base whenever possible. Coach Barresse praised the team’s aggressive baserunning and overall focus, calling it their most complete game of the season. Mucciarone echoed that sentiment, noting that everything was working as he filled the strike zone and induced early-count outs. He finished the day with 109 pitches, retiring 15 of the final 17 batters he faced and allowing only five Black Bears to reach scoring position.
Maine starter Jason Kriger fell to 0-4 on the season despite battling through five innings. He allowed eight hits and two earned runs as the River Hawks manufactured early leads in both the first and second innings. Cal Chance started the afternoon with a leadoff double and eventually scored on an infield RBI hit by Carlos Martinez, who finished the day 3-for-4 with three RBIs. In the second, Chance added a sacrifice fly to score Joseph DeLanzo, who had reached after being hit by a pitch. The game truly broke open in the sixth inning against the Maine bullpen. UMass Lowell sent eight men to the plate and scored five runs in the frame, highlighted by sacrifice flies from Martinez and Jorge Burgos, along with a pivotal two-run single by Rowan Masse that extended the lead to 7-1.
The River Hawks added three insurance runs in the eighth inning courtesy of a wild pitch, another RBI hit from Martinez, and a sacrifice fly by Nicholas Solorzano. Sean O’Leary also contributed significantly to the hit parade, going 3-for-4 with two runs scored. Following the 10-1 win, both teams prepare for game two of the series on Saturday afternoon. Maine is scheduled to start Gianni Gambardello, while UMass Lowell will turn to Brian Foley, who is looking to bounce back after a difficult outing in his previous start at Binghamton.
