The era of “keeping it in the family” at Chapel Hill has come to a sudden and unceremonious end. On Tuesday night, the University of North Carolina announced it has fired head men’s basketball coach Hubert Davis after five seasons.
The decision marks a seismic shift for a program that hasn’t made an outside hire since 2003. Here is a look at why the change was made and the high-profile names now linked to the most prestigious opening in the sport.
The Breaking Point: A Historic Collapse
While Davis led the Tar Heels to the National Championship game in 2022 and earned ACC Coach of the Year honors in 2024, the inconsistency became untenable. The “final straw” was a staggering 82–78 overtime loss to No. 11 seed VCU in the first round of the 2026 NCAA Tournament last Thursday.
In that game, UNC blew a 19-point second-half lead, the largest collapse in the history of the tournament’s opening round. Following a similar first-round exit in 2025, it marked the first time since the bracket expanded in 1985 that North Carolina was eliminated in the Round of 64 in consecutive seasons.
“This was not an easy decision because of Hubert’s tremendous character… but we must move forward in a way that allows our team to compete more consistently at an elite level.” > — Bubba Cunningham, UNC Athletic Director
Where Does Carolina Turn Now?
For the first time in decades, the “Carolina Family” pool of candidates—former players and assistants—is noticeably dry. Reports indicate that the search committee, led by outgoing AD Bubba Cunningham and incoming AD Steve Newmark, is prepared to look outside the program to find a “home run” hire.
The “Big Swing” Candidates
UNC is expected to force these three coaches to say “no” before moving down their list:
- Billy Donovan (Chicago Bulls): The former Florida coach has two national titles and has long been rumored to be interested in the right college return.
- Nate Oats (Alabama): The architect of the nation’s most modern, high-octane offense. However, his buyout is reportedly $10 million starting April 1.
- Jay Wright (Retired/CBS): The “White Whale” of coaching searches. While currently retired, the allure of the Carolina blue might be the only thing capable of bringing the Villanova legend back to the sidelines.
The Realistic Front-Runners
If the “Big Three” stay put, look for these names to gain immediate traction:
- Todd Golden (Florida): Fresh off leading the Gators to the 2025 National Championship, Golden is the hottest name in coaching. His buyout is a steep $16 million, but UNC has deep pockets.
- Tommy Lloyd (Arizona): He has turned Arizona into a perennial No. 1 seed contender and plays a fast-paced style that would fit perfectly in Chapel Hill.
- T.J. Otzelberger (Iowa State): Known for his elite defensive schemes, he has the $4 million “bargain” buyout and the proven ability to build a winner through the transfer portal.
What’s Next?
The university has hired executive search firm Turnkey ZRG to assist in the process. With the transfer portal already open and the roster in flux—including the potential departure of star freshman Caleb Wilson—UNC will likely look to move quickly.
