Forty-six years to the day after the original “Miracle on Ice” in Lake Placid, the United States has once again stunned the hockey world. On Sunday, Team USA defeated Canada 2–1 in overtime at the Milano Santagiulia Ice Hockey Arena to claim its third Olympic gold medal and first since 1980.
In a tournament that finally saw the return of NHL superstars to the Olympic stage, the Americans used a combination of superhuman goaltending and a “Golden Goal” from a New Jersey Devils superstar to dethrone the sport’s most decorated nation.
The Hellebuyck Wall
While the forwards captured the headlines, the gold belongs to goaltender Connor Hellebuyck. Facing a relentless Canadian onslaught that outshot the U.S. 42–28, Hellebuyck delivered one of the greatest performances in international history.
- The Stand: Hellebuyck stopped 41 shots, including a massive breakaway save on Connor McDavid in the second period and a sprawling paddle save against Devon Toews in the third.
- The PK: Led by Hellebuyck, the American penalty kill finished the tournament a perfect 17-for-17, shutting down a lethal Canadian 5-on-3 advantage midway through the game.
How the Goals Happened
- First Period (6:00): Matt Boldy opened the scoring for the U.S., splitting defenders Cale Makar and Devon Toews before slipping a backhand through the legs of Jordan Binnington.
- Second Period (18:16): After pinning the U.S. in their own zone for nearly ten minutes, Canada finally broke through. Cale Makar rifled a wrist shot from the left circle off a clean faceoff win to level the game at 1–1.
- Overtime (1:41): In the 3-on-3 extra frame, Zach Werenski forced a turnover from Nathan MacKinnon and fed Jack Hughes in the slot. Hughes snapped a shot five-hole on Binnington to trigger a madcap celebration on the American bench.
Honoring “Johnny Hockey”
The most emotional moment of the night occurred during the post-game celebration. As the Americans accepted their gold medals, captain Auston Matthews, Brady Tkachuk, and Zach Werenski skated with the jersey of the late Johnny Gaudreau.
Gaudreau, a staple of USA Hockey who passed away in 2024, was a primary motivation for this veteran-led squad. The team dedicated their undefeated (6–0) tournament run to the memory of Johnny and his brother, Matthew.

A Historic Sweep
The men’s victory completed a historic “Double Gold” for the United States. Just 72 hours earlier, the U.S. Women’s Team also defeated Canada in a 2–1 overtime thriller to claim their own Olympic title.
For the first time in nearly half a century, the United States sits atop the hockey world in both categories—proving that while 1980 was a miracle, 2026 was a masterpiece of modern American depth.
