The 2026 college baseball season ignited this weekend with all the drama and high-octane offense fans have come to expect. From a historic individual performance at Baylor to a seismic shift in the rankings following the Shriners Children’s College Showdown in Arlington, the opening three days proved that no preseason ranking is safe.
While UCLA and LSU managed to retain their spots at the very top, the first weekend claimed several high-profile victims, leaving the Top 25 looking vastly different as we head into Week 2.
The Arlington Explosion: Oklahoma Makes a Statement
The most significant story of the weekend took place at Globe Life Field. The Oklahoma Sooners, widely picked to finish near the bottom of the SEC in their debut season, walked out of the Shriners Children’s College Showdown as the undisputed “Winners of the Weekend.”
- Dominance: The Sooners outscored their opponents 32–6 over three games.
- The Clincher: They capped the weekend with a thunderous 12–2 run-rule victory over No. 10 TCU.
- The Result: Oklahoma surged from unranked to No. 21 in the D1Baseball poll.
LSU’s Offensive Masterclass
The No. 2 LSU Tigers showed why they are the favorites to repeat as SEC champions. Hosting Milwaukee at Alex Box Stadium, the Tigers’ bats were alive from the first pitch.
- The Numbers: LSU outscored the Panthers 41–15 across a three-game sweep.
- Pitching Prowess: The Tigers’ staff combined for 49 strikeouts over the weekend, the most in a season-opening series in program history.
- Final Game: A 21–7 blowout on Sunday served notice that the Tigers’ lineup has no “easy outs.”
Historic Heroics: The Grand Slam King
In Waco, Texas, Baylor first baseman Tyce Armstrong etched his name into the NCAA record books. During a matchup against New Mexico State, Armstrong launched three grand slams in a single game. This incredible feat tied a record that has only been achieved once before in the history of Division I baseball.

Rankings Shake-Up: Winners and Losers
The “chaos” of opening weekend was unkind to several blue-blood programs, most notably in the SEC and ACC.
- Vanderbilt & Arizona Fall: Both the No. 23 Commodores and No. 24 Wildcats dropped out of the Top 25 entirely. Vanderbilt went 1–2 in Arlington, including a stinging 11–1 loss to Oklahoma State, while Arizona was swept 0–3.
- Louisville Stumbles: The No. 8 Cardinals lost their opening series to Michigan State, falling to No. 15 in the updated rankings.
- The Climbers: Along with Oklahoma, West Virginia entered the Top 25 (No. 25) after a dominant road sweep of Georgia Southern. Texas (No. 3) and Mississippi State (No. 4) hold their spots after perfect 3–0 starts.
