NEWARK, NJ — The Boston Fleet (5-0) are sailing into uncharted territory. Behind another masterclass in goal from Aerin Frankel, the Fleet defeated the New York Sirens 2-0 on Wednesday night at the Prudential Center, becoming the first team in PWHL history to start a season with five consecutive regulation victories.
The win solidifies Boston’s position at the top of the standings and extends their remarkable dominance over New York, having now won eight straight games against the Sirens dating back to last season.
Frankel’s Brick Wall
The story of the game was, once again, the play of Aerin Frankel. Facing a desperate New York offense that threw 33 shots her way, Frankel remained perfectly composed to record her third shutout in just five starts this season.
- The Stat: Frankel has now allowed only two goals in 300 minutes of play this season.
- Shutout King: Her three shutouts already surpass her entire regular-season total from the inaugural 2024 season.
- Clutch Finish: The Sirens mounted a furious comeback attempt in the third period, outshooting Boston 12-7, but Frankel denied every opportunity, including several high-danger looks from Sirens star rookie Sarah Fillier.
Offensive Sparks: Huber and Schepers
While the defense held the line, two forwards provided the necessary cushion to keep the undefeated streak alive.
- The Rookie’s First: Five minutes into the second period, rookie forward Ella Huber (the Fleet’s 2nd-round pick) received a high pass from defender Haley Winn and broke toward the net. Huber fired a precise shot into the top corner for her first professional goal. The milestone was lovely as it came just hours before her 23rd birthday.
- The Insurance Marker: Just four minutes later, Liz Schepers doubled the lead. Following a shot from Jamie Lee Rattray that was initially saved, Schepers pounced on the rebound to tuck it home. It was her first goal since scoring the Walter Cup-winning overtime goal for Minnesota last season before joining Boston in free agency.
Elite Defense and Special Teams
The victory was a testament to the heavy workload of Boston’s top defensive pair. Haley Winn (26:51) and Captain Megan Keller (25:56) both logged massive minutes to neutralize the Sirens’ top lines.
Furthermore, the Fleet’s penalty kill remained a perfect 100% on the season, successfully killing off three minor penalties. Boston remains the only team in the league yet to concede a goal while shorthanded.
Looking Ahead
The Fleet’s early-season success has set a new standard for consistency in the PWHL. “Our group, right from day one, has taken ownership of our identity,” said first-year head coach Kris Sparre. “They bring it every practice and every game.”
| Team | Record | Points |
| Boston Fleet | 5-0-0-0 | 15 |
| Vancouver Goldeneyes | 2-1-1-0 | 8 |
The Fleet now departs for a four-game road trip, starting with a highly anticipated rematch against the Minnesota Frost on Friday, Dec. 19. The Sirens will look to snap their two-game shutout streak when they host the Toronto Sceptres this Sunday.
QUOTES
Boston Head Coach Kris Sparre on what the Fleet’s early success this season has meant to him as a first-year head coach: “I think what I’m most grateful for is the players. As a coach, you put together systems, you put together an identity, and you want to have standards that you uphold every day. Our group, right from day one,e has taken ownership of that, and they bring it every practice, every game. It’s not always perfect, but they find a way to get it done.”
Fleet rookie forward Ella Huber on scoring her first PWHL goal: “It was fun. I’ve been waiting for this. We’ve been practicing a lot of two-on-one recently, and I’ve been told I have a shooter’s mentality. Our [defenders] are incredible. They’re great at getting the puck up the ice. Anytime Winn, Keller, or any of our D are on the ice, we know that the puck is moving up the ice. I like to gain some speed and get the puck where it needs to be.”
Sirens Head Coach Greg Fargo on the team’s play facing Aerin Frankel: “There were a lot of good moments tonight where we had some quality looks throughout the game. I thought we had a good amount of offensive zone time where we had them on the ropes and tired. However, I think maybe we let them off the hook a little bit a few times where [our offense] was able to give her one that she can easily see and control the game while their shift was extended, and they were tired. In some other areas, we missed opportunities, but there were a lot of great things. We had some great chances, and I thought Aerin played a great game once again.”
New York forward Sarah Fillier on the change in linemates for the first time this season: “I thought we got some quality looks together. I think the change of the setup brings a bit more variety in how we can attack and how we saw that today. Like Fargs [Fargo] said, we’re right there, and we’re getting good chances and pucks around the crease – we just have to bury one here.”
