LOWELL, MA — The UMass Lowell River Hawks (4-7) closed out their non-Division I schedule with an overwhelming performance Wednesday night, crushing the Fisher College Falcons (10-4) 122-73 at the Costello Athletic Center. The game provided a valuable opportunity to sharpen skills and distribute minutes before the start of America East play.
Historic Offensive Output
The River Hawks’ offense was relentless, posting the team’s highest score since January 4, 1995, when they recorded 133 points against Assumption College.
- Double-Double Dominance: Two players recorded double-doubles:
- Austin Green: Logged his fourth double-double of the season with 20 points and 16 rebounds.
- Jerrell Robinson II: Registered his first of the season with career-highs of 21 points and 15 rebounds.
- Balanced Scoring: Five River Hawks finished in double figures, a feat last achieved on March 4, 2025. Daniel Yepdo added 12 points, and Xavier Spencer scored 11.
- Bench and Paint Control: UMass Lowell dominated every statistical category, racking up 76 points in the paint, 67 points off the bench, and 32 points on second chances.
A Lead from the Tip
UMass Lowell led from the opening possession. After all five starters scored before the first media timeout, the Falcons managed to keep the deficit under double digits for the first ten minutes. However, a jumper by Xavier Spencer extended the lead to 29-18 with 10 minutes left in the half, opening the floodgates. The River Hawks finished the half on a 33-7 run to take a commanding 62-25 lead into the locker room.
Defense Remains the Priority
Despite the offensive explosion, the River Hawks were not satisfied with their defensive effort, particularly in the second half when they conceded 46 points.
Jerrell Robinson II and Daniel Yepdo both stated afterwards that “Defense is the #1 priority to fix.” Robinson added, “This game was about us.”
Assistant coach Matt Graves called it a good win and was pleased with the distribution of playing time, but singled out the need to improve “ball pressure.” He was encouraged that the team was unhappy with allowing 72 points, calling it “Too Many.”
The River Hawks now face a busy December schedule with four games remaining, three of which are on the road, starting with a game at Quinnipiac this Saturday. America East play begins on January 3 against UAlbany.
