KNOXVILLE, TN — The No. 12 Vanderbilt Commodores marched into Neyland Stadium and delivered one of the most significant victories in program history, defeating their in-state rivals, the No. 19 Tennessee Volunteers, 45-24 on Saturday. The emphatic win secured Vanderbilt’s first-ever 10-win season and their most points scored against the Volunteers since 1923, putting immense pressure on the College Football Playoff committee heading into Championship Week.
The game was an offensive firefight in the first half, with both teams trading blows to enter halftime locked in a 21-21 tie. Quarterback Diego Pavia led the charge for the Commodores, matching Tennessee’s three scores with an electric blend of passing and running, including a crucial 6-yard touchdown toss just 12 seconds before the break.
The second half, however, was a complete domination by the Commodores. Vanderbilt outscored Tennessee 24-3 over the final 30 minutes, fueled by a relentless ground attack that the Volunteers’ defense simply could not stop. The Commodores generated a season-high 314 rushing yards and amassed a staggering 582 total yards of offense, controlling the clock for nearly 35 minutes.
Running back Sedrick Alexander was unstoppable, scoring three rushing touchdowns, including the go-ahead 5-yard run that capped an 11-play, 75-yard drive to open the third quarter and give Vanderbilt a 28-21 lead. Pavia was the star, finishing with 268 yards and a touchdown through the air, while rushing for a career-high 165 yards and another score. His 24-yard scrambling touchdown run in the fourth quarter extended the lead to 38-24, effectively sealing the game.
The loss was an “extremely disappointing” end to the regular season for Tennessee, according to coach Josh Heupel, who cited the poor defensive performance, which allowed Vanderbilt to take full control after the halftime break. The win not only validated Vanderbilt’s climb under coach Clark Lea but also secured their sixth SEC victory of the season, a new program record. The Commodores now await their final postseason fate with their playoff hopes miraculously intact.
