DETROIT, MI — The Green Bay Packers (8-3-1) continued their holiday tradition of spoiling the party in Detroit, defeating the rival Lions (7-5) with a gritty 31-24 victory at Ford Field on Thanksgiving. The win, Green Bay’s third straight, secured the season sweep over the Lions and provided a crucial cushion in the tight NFC North race.
Love’s Lethal Fourth-Down Aggression
Quarterback Jordan Love delivered his most impactful performance of the season, showcasing both efficiency and boldness. He matched a career high with four touchdown passes and finished the day with a sharp 124.2 passer rating on 18-of-30 passing for 234 yards.
The defining characteristic of the game was Green Bay’s sheer aggression on fourth down, a strategy Head Coach Matt LaFleur embraced. Love converted three critical fourth-down opportunities, two of which went for touchdowns:
First Half Fireworks
On fourth-and-3, Love connected with Dontayvion Wicks for a spectacular 22-yard touchdown strike. Later in the second quarter, on fourth-and-1, Love found Romeo Doubs for a 2-yard score, extending the early lead and setting a tone of offensive confidence.
Defense Secures Crucial Stops
The Packers’ defense, bolstered by the mid-season acquisition of defensive lineman Micah Parsons, came up with key stops precisely when Detroit threatened to take control.
Third Quarter Swing
To open the second half, the Lions failed to convert on fourth-and-3 deep in Green Bay territory. Two plays later, Love launched a deep pass to Christian Watson for a game-changing 51-yard touchdown, immediately restoring the Packers’ 10-point lead.
The Final Nail
Trailing by a single score late in the fourth quarter, the Lions drove deep inside the red zone. But it was Parsons who halted their momentum, logging a critical sack on third down to force Detroit to settle for a field goal, leaving the score at 31-24 with under three minutes to play. Parsons finished the day with 2.5 sacks, making history as the first player to record at least 12 sacks in each of his first five seasons.
Lions’ Injuries and Offensive Struggles
The Lions battled hard despite severe adversity. They lost top wide receiver Amon-Ra St. Brown to an ankle injury in the first quarter, adding him to a long list of key offensive starters already sidelined. Wide receiver Jameson Williams stepped up admirably, catching seven passes for a career-high 144 yards, but he dropped a critical fourth-down pass in the fourth quarter that could have kept a scoring drive alive.
Ultimately, it was the Green Bay offense that closed the door, converting a gutsy fourth-and-3 completion to Dontayvion Wicks in the final moments to secure the first down and kneel out the clock, sealing a dominant and season-defining victory.
