ATLANTA, GA — In a game that delivered the most dramatic finish of the Carolina Panthers’ season, the young team clawed its way back from a massive deficit before securing a chaotic 30-27 overtime victory against the Atlanta Falcons at Mercedes-Benz Stadium. The thrilling win gave Carolina (6-5) a crucial sweep of their division rival and keeps them squarely in the NFC Wild Card race.
The story of the comeback was the spectacular, career-defining performance of quarterback Bryce Young. Despite leaving briefly in the first quarter with an apparent ankle injury—a cruel echo of a previous injury—Young returned to the field and put the entire offense on his back, ultimately finishing with a career-high 448 passing yards and three touchdowns. His stat line included 31 completions on 45 attempts, a heroic effort made necessary by a Panthers running game that was largely stalled for the day.
The Falcons (3-7), riding a five-game losing streak, looked dominant early, establishing a comfortable 21-10 halftime lead behind a strong running game and an efficient day from quarterback Michael Penix Jr. However, the momentum shifted decisively in the third quarter when Penix was knocked out of the game with a knee injury, forcing backup Kirk Cousins into action.
The Panthers seized the opportunity, riding the hot hand of their young quarterback. Young connected twice with rookie wide receiver Tetairoa McMillan, whose second score came on a 12-yard strike in the fourth quarter to give Carolina its first lead of the day, 27-24, with just over a minute remaining. Not to be outdone, Cousins quickly engineered a frantic drive to set up former Panthers kicker Zane Gonzalez, who drilled a 45-yard field goal to send the game into overtime, tied at 27-27.
In overtime, the Panthers wasted no time establishing control. A massive 54-yard catch-and-run from tight end Tommy Tremble immediately put Carolina deep into the red zone. Three plays later, kicker Ryan Fitzgerald—playing in the stadium where he once kicked in high school—finished the job by nailing the 28-yard field goal, securing the hard-fought 30-27 victory and a monumental comeback. The win marks the first time the Panthers have swept the Falcons since 2013, providing definitive proof of the toughness and development of their franchise quarterback.
