FOXBOROUGH, MA — The New England Patriots’ resurgence under first-year head coach Mike Vrabel is officially the NFL’s biggest story. On Thursday Night Football, the Patriots (9-2) extended their remarkable winning streak to eight consecutive games, methodically taking down the AFC East rival New York Jets (2-9) with a decisive 27-14 victory at Gillette Stadium.
The win not only guaranteed New England its first winning season since 2021 but also matched the longest winning streak achieved by the franchise since the final year of the Tom Brady era in 2019.
The Breakout Star: TreVeyon Henderson’s Hat Trick
While rookie quarterback Drake Maye continues to impress, the star of the night was running back TreVeyon Henderson. The rookie followed up his two-touchdown performance last week with a massive three-touchdown night against the Jets’ defense:
-
Hat Trick Hero: Henderson scored twice on runs from the 7-yard line and added a 6-yard touchdown reception from Maye in the third quarter. He joins Rob Gronkowski as the only two rookies in franchise history to record three touchdowns in a single game.
-
The Grind: Playing without injured starter Rhamondre Stevenson, Henderson logged a career-high 19 rushing attempts, totaling 62 yards and driving the methodical New England offense.
Maye and Diggs: The New Duo
Quarterback Drake Maye delivered another highly efficient performance, further fueling his growing MVP candidacy.
-
Efficient Control: Maye completed 25-of-34 passes for 281 yards and a touchdown, often showcasing excellent poise and pocket mobility against a strong Jets pass rush. The Patriots’ offense was particularly effective on money downs, with Maye converting seven of 11 third and fourth-down attempts.
-
Star Target: Veteran wide receiver Stefon Diggs was Maye’s favorite target, hauling in nine catches for 105 yards, his third 100-yard game of the season, and proving the high-profile trade was well worth the investment.
The Jets’ Familiar Struggles
The New York Jets opened the game with an encouraging 14-play, 72-yard touchdown drive, capped by a five-yard rushing score from quarterback Justin Fields. However, the early momentum quickly vanished.
-
Offensive Drought: After their opening drive, the Jets struggled mightily to move the ball, resulting in three consecutive three-and-outs in the second quarter.
-
Passing Problems: Fields was largely ineffective through the air, completing just 15 of 26 passes for a season-low 116 yards. The Jets sorely missed the receiving threat of Garrett Wilson, who was placed on injured reserve earlier in the day.
-
Costly Mistakes: The final nail in the coffin came in the fourth quarter when a mishandled snap by Fields led to a turnover, allowing the Patriots to seal the victory with a field goal.
The Patriots’ win improves their division-leading record to 3-0 in the AFC East, while the struggling Jets fall to 2-9 and are mathematically eliminated from the playoff picture.
