GLENDALE, AZ — It was ugly, improbable, and utterly unforgettable. For the Tennessee Titans, Sunday’s 22-21 victory over the Arizona Cardinals was more than just a win; it was a desperate, fourth-quarter exorcism of a 10-game losing streak and, more importantly, a watershed moment for their rookie quarterback, Cam Ward.
The No. 1 overall pick of the 2025 NFL Draft, who had struggled through the Titans’ 0-4 start, saved his best for last, engineering a stunning comeback that culminated in a walk-off 29-yard field goal by Joey Slye as time expired.
The Rookie Rises from the Ashes
For three quarters at State Farm Stadium, it looked like business as usual for the struggling Titans. They entered the fourth quarter trailing 21-6, a deficit that had pundits and fans alike preparing the post-game critique. Ward’s stat line reflected the struggle, completing just 5 of 18 passes for a meager 58 yards in the first half.
But what followed was the kind of clutch performance that can change the trajectory of a season and a career.
“I wish I’d have started better personally, but at the end of the day, it doesn’t matter how you start, it’s how you finish,” Ward said after the game.
And finish he did.
Ward was a different quarterback in the final quarter, completing 13 of 18 passes for 193 yards, leading three scoring drives that erased an 18-point deficit—the franchise’s largest fourth-quarter comeback victory since 2006.
The Fortunes Turn on Fumbles
The rally began with a stroke of incredible, if somewhat bizarre, luck. After the Cardinals were denied a seemingly game-sealing 72-yard touchdown run due to a fumble just before the goal line, which resulted in a touchback. The Titans took possession, and Ward capitalized immediately. A highlight-reel 47-yard deep pass to Calvin Ridley set up a Tony Pollard 1-yard touchdown run, cutting the lead to 21-12.
The next score was arguably the craziest of the day. Facing third down, Ward threw a pass that was tipped and intercepted. But fortune, which had ignored the Titans all season, finally smiled upon them. The Cardinals defender, Dadrion Taylor-Demerson, fumbled the ball, and Titans receiver Tyler Lockett pounced on the loose ball in the end zone for a miraculous touchdown. Suddenly, the score was 21-19 with 4:39 to play.
The Game-Winning Drive
With the defense holding strong, forcing a punt with 1:53 remaining, the stage was set for the rookie’s ultimate test. Taking over at their own 18-yard line, Ward embraced the moment.
“That’s where I want to live at,” Ward commented on the two-minute drill. “You want to take your guys down there, have [K] Joey [Slye] make the game-winning kick and celebrate.”
Ward was nearly flawless on the final 11-play, 71-yard march. The key moment came with less than a minute on the clock. Ward uncorked a perfectly thrown, 38-yard dime down the right sideline to Calvin Ridley, putting the Titans firmly in field goal range. A few more calculated runs and clock-killing maneuvers set up Joey Slye’s 29-yard chip shot as the clock hit zero.
The field goal split the uprights, and a long-overdue celebration erupted.
Ward finished the day with a career-high 265 passing yards, demonstrating the elite arm talent and poise in the pocket that made him the top pick. While the entire team was fighting for its first win, this victory was a landmark for the young quarterback. The Titans became the first team to overcome an 18-point deficit and win with a rookie starting QB since Daniel Jones in 2019, cementing Ward’s performance in franchise history alongside Vince Young as the only two rookie quarterbacks to win a game in which they trailed by 15 in the fourth quarter.
For the Titans, now 1-4, the improbable desert victory is more than just a notch in the win column; it’s a belief-booster for a young team and a definitive sign that their rookie quarterback has the resilience and clutch potential to lead them in the right direction.
