In a stunning move that signals the end of an era, Oklahoma State University has parted ways with longtime head coach Mike Gundy. The decision comes after a turbulent start to the season and mounting pressure for the Cowboys to move in a new direction.
Gundy, who took over in 2005, became the winningest coach in program history, compiling a résumé that included a 2011 Big 12 Championship, a Fiesta Bowl victory, and 17 straight bowl appearances. His trademark mullet and fiery personality made him one of the most recognizable coaches in college football, while his teams consistently turned OSU into a contender.
But in recent years, the Cowboys struggled to stay at the top of the Big 12. Frustrating losses, recruiting battles slipping away, and fan unrest placed Gundy on the hot seat. This season’s uneven performances — combined with the rise of conference rivals like Texas, Oklahoma (before departing for the SEC), and Kansas State — left many questioning whether his voice still resonated in Stillwater.
Athletic Director Chad Weiberg released a statement:
“Mike Gundy has been a pillar of Oklahoma State football for nearly 20 years. His contributions to this university, on and off the field, will never be forgotten. At this time, however, we believe it is in the best interest of the program to move in a new direction.”
The move shocked some alumni and former players, who credit Gundy for transforming Oklahoma State into a nationally respected program. Still, others felt the decision was overdue, arguing that OSU had plateaued while conference peers continued to evolve.
An interim coach will guide the Cowboys through the remainder of the season while the school begins a national search for Gundy’s successor. Early names floated include rising coordinators from power programs, as well as sitting head coaches looking for a bigger stage.
For Oklahoma State fans, Gundy’s departure marks the closing of one of the most important chapters in school history. From his iconic “I’m a man, I’m 40!” press conference to decades of competitive football, his legacy is secure. But as the program turns the page, the next hire will be tasked with taking the Cowboys beyond respectability — and back into championship contention.
