As the holiday weekend gets started, the action in the ACC is heating up as well. 14 of the 16 teams will be playing ball this weekend, hoping to better their position for the postseason conference tournament, which is just five weeks away. Now, there is already a schedule change. The Virginia vs. Florida State series schedule for Tallahassee has been canceled due to the tragedy on campus. There will be no makeup date for this three-game series.
The ACC continues to have solid results regarding the NCAA Baseball Tournament. For the second week in a row, D1 Baseball Field of Projections has the league with 11 teams in. Four schools, Clemson, Florida State, Georgia Tech, and North Carolina, are regional hosts. The list also has Stanford as a “team to watch.” This week’s RPI ranking shows the ACC with 11 teams inside the Top 45, with five inside the Top 25. Clemson leads the way at #6, Georgia Tech at #13, UNC at #14, Florida State at #16, and Wake Forest at #21.
Meanwhile, the league did very well with midseason All-American teams. D1 Baseball named 10 ACC players to their midseason All-American list and Perfect Game named 12 to theirs. Seven of those 12 players were named to the first team. They also named six freshmen to its mid-season Freshman All-American group. The Golden Spikes Award midseason Watch List has 12 members of the conference on its 45-man watch list. The Seminoles and Demon Deacons lead the way with three apiece.
The Perfect Game National Player of the Week is North Carolina’s Gavin Gallaher. He received the award on Wednesday. Gallaher went 9-for15 with four home runs, 11 RBI, and seven runs scored. He is seventh in the league in sacrifice flies with five.
As for this weekend’s games, Georgia Tech heads to Miami having won six straight league games and back to back sweeps of ACC teams. It’s the first time they have done that since 2011. The Hurricanes have won seven of their last 10 games and are coming off a series win over Duke.
UNC is on the road at Virginia Tech, and the Tar Heels have won eight of ten and four straight league series. VT is looking to improve on its national ranking from last week. They got off to a good start with an 11-4 win earlier this week against East Tennessee State.
The best series of the weekend could be Louisville against Clemson. This series will be played in Clemson, South Carolina. Both teams are playing well having won eight of their last 10 games. The Tigers are really tough to beat at home. They have a record of 22-4 at Clemson.
We hope everyone has a Happy Easter Weekend.
