Once again, the Army/Navy game was a classic. The winner of the game would receive the Commander in Chiefs’ Trophy. President-elect Donald Trump and Vice President-elect JD Vance attended the game. They invited New York Subway hero Daniel Penny who helped with an angry subway rider. This is one of the best rivalries in sports. One of the coolest aspects of the game is seeing the cadets from both military academies. Both teams are now a part of the AAC with Army joining this year. This was not a conference game as Army wrapped up a conference championship the previous week before this game. The Black Knights only had one loss coming into the game and that was to the Notre Dame Fighting Irish. The Midshipmen had two losses one against Notre Dame and the other to the Tulane Green Wave.
The game took place at Northwest Stadium in Landover, Maryland, home of the NFL franchise the Washington Commanders. This was the final regular season game of the 2024 college football season. Many experts said that the Black Knights would defeat the Midshipmen easily. The opposite happened. The star of the game was Midshipmen quarterback Blake Horvath. He had 204 yards on 25 carries and two touchdowns. On top of that, he threw for 107 yards and another two touchdowns. Horvath was part of all four touchdowns that Navy scored. Navy’s defense contained the Army offense and both teams run the triple-option offense. Black Knights quarterback Bryson Daily threw three interceptions after throwing just one interception in the previous 12 games. The Army offense was held to 178 total yards and just 3.2 yards per play.
The Midshipmen won the game 31-13 and the Commander in Chief Trophy. This is the first time in five years that Navy has won the game. The 18-point margin of victory broke away from the series. In the past 10 games, eight of them were decided by just one score. Last year’s game came down to the last play when Army won 17-11. The Midshipmen had their 14-game winning streak snapped in 2016. But the Black Knights have won six of the past eight meetings. Either way, the game is competitive. Many of the players will help keep our freedom free as they defend our country. It’s cool to see what designs each academy picks for the game.
At the end of the game, the Army Black Knights sang their alma mater first, followed by the Navy Midshipmen. The cadets from each academy sing along with each alma mater. What you will never see is a flag plant incident at this game. That might be outlawed in all of college football soon. This game is just beautiful to watch and attend no matter where the game is and what the weather is like. The first half ended with the Midshipmen leading 14-7. In the second half Navy took over and shut down Army. This upcoming year in 2025 the game will take place in Baltimore, Maryland.
