DETROIT- The city of Detroit, Michigan has several fun facts. The city will host the 2024 NFL Draft starting this Thursday. The city is mainly known for being the “Motor City”. The automobile industry was born there. Henry Ford started the lucrative industry and the city continues to be well known for making travel easier and faster. It forever changed the lives of people around the world by allowing individuals to live away from major cities and continue to have easy access to work without the necessity to live in heavily populated areas.

There’s also the music industry and the famous “Motown” genre. Some of the best titles include “My Girl”, “Baby I Need Your Loving”, and “Dancing In The Street”.

Detroit started as a fort in 1701 by French Explorer de la Mothe Cadillac. The area was a huge trading hub to the Native Americans.

It took over 100 years for Detroit to finally become a city in 1815. The city is also well known for high quality cigars and kitchen range stove tops.

Detroit’s tallest building is the Marriott Hotel that is 727 feet tall. The second tallest building is Hudson’s Tower at 680 feet tall. One Detroit Center is the third tallest building in the city at 619 feet tall. The Penebscot Building is 568 feet tall. The Renaissance Center 100 Tower is 509 feet tall. For a comparison, the KeyTower in Cleveland, Ohio is 947 feet tall. The Sears Tower in Chicago is 1,450 feet tall. The World Trade Center in New York City is 1,776 feet tall.

The Detroit River flows from Canada and is called Riviere Detroit in French. It connects Lake St. Claire and the upper Great Lakes as well as serving as an international border.

Detroit currently has over 600,000 people living there although the latest 2024 U.S. Census data is not available. The city has one of the most diverse populations in the entire United States.

Ford Field, home of the Detroit Lions has a seating capacity of 65,000. It hosted Super Bowl XL in 2006. Comerica Park, home of the Detroit Tigers is right next to Ford Field. It has a seating capacity is 41,000 and the stadium features a unique waterfall that will automatically choreograph to any music according to MLB.com. The Pistons and Red Wings play at Little Caesars Arena which has a capacity of 19,515. It is located near the River. Some of the restaurants nearby include Harry’s Detroit Bar and Grill as well as Temple Bar.

Hart Plaza on the Eastern Riverfront will host the 2024 NFL Draft.
