With Labor Day weekend fast approaching, the college football season has arrived. Some schools in FBS got a jump start last weekend and everybody will be in action this week. That includes schools that play in FCS. The Merrimack College Warriors will get underway on Friday night, September 2, with their home opener vs Holy Cross. It will mark the beginning of what could be an interesting season for senior defensive back Darion Mckenzie. He will start the year on the 2023 Reese’s Senior Bowl Watchlist.
A 6-2 200 lbs. graduate student, he had a solid year a season ago for the Warriors. He had 34 tackles, 2.5 for lost yardage, a forced fumble, and nine pass deflections to his credit. The Berlin, MD native put himself on the radar in one of the better college football all-star games that take place in the offseason. Mckenzie can also add special teams to his resume as he returned kicks for Merrimack last year. He returned 10 kicks for a total of 306 yards, with his longest going for 67 yards. McKenzie played all 11 games for the Warriors and was named to the NEC All-Conference Second Team.
The Senior Bowl is played each year in Mobile, Alabama, and is a game that pro scouts will attend. The week of practices that lead up to the game for some is more important than the game itself. McKenzie is one of only two players from the Northeast Conference to make the Senior Bowl Watchlist, which is of note since this is a game that attracts players from all levels of the college game. To make it to Mobile, your season needs to stand out.
If you are a player that is looking to see where you stand when it comes to next-level possibilities, then the Reese’s Senior Bowl is a nice place to make your case. This year’s game is scheduled for February 4, 2023, and will be broadcasted by the NFL Network.
