The USF Bulls didn’t have the season that they wanted in 2021. They only won two games after winning just one the year before. Head coach Jeff Scott can now hit the road on the recruiting trail. He can use the fact that the Bulls have a new indoor practice facility to attract players. USF also has the transfer portal to help them bring the players to Tampa to turn the program around. I know from reading many social media platforms that they are not renewing season tickets until the program gets better. Many of us saw that the team got better from the first game in 2021 to the last game of the season. From my general standpoint in 2020, they were overmatched in many of the games. On the other hand, in 2021 they had many games that they should have won and possibly be in a bowl game.
As we speak, the USF Bulls are number one in the country using the transfer portal. They added 25 players, 13 on defense and 12 on offense. Of the 25 players, four of them came over in the portal. On defense, they added seven defensive linemen. On offense, they brought in four wide receivers and two quarterbacks. It’s good that they added some defensive lineman because in 2021 they seemed to be pushed back many times. The other aspect is that they need is to make tackles and not miss them. I mentioned in my season review that was a must for the 2022 season. Most of the recruits or transfers are local to the state of Florida. The Bulls had three transfers from Clemson University. Most of the transfers from last year worked out well for the USF Bulls. Jeff Scott is excited about the class this year as well.
The USF Bulls will have a new defensive coordinator in 2022 in Bob Shoop. Shoop will take over for Glenn Spencer. Spencer’s defense struggled in 2021. Many will say that they were tired out from being on the field too long. The biggest problem that I saw is that the defensive backs played too far back of the opposing wide receivers. The opposing teams saw that and made short passes which led to longer drives for them. That is how you beat a team by keeping their offense off the field. Hopefully, Shoop will have a different plan. Many of us also saw the lack of a pass rush. When the opposing teams’ quarterback has all the time in the world to throw the game becomes very easy. The four to look at are James Ash, Nick Bags, Jatorian Hansford, and Clyde Pinder Jr.
The USF Bulls added two new quarterbacks that will compete with Timmy McClain. Both Cade Fortin and Katravis Marsh both joined the transfer portal. The two new quarterbacks are Byrum Brown and Gunner Smith. Brown is 6’3 from Raleigh, North Carolina. He comes out of Rolesville High School with 3,703 yards and 43 touchdowns. Smith is a local kid from Lake Mary, FL. He attended Lake Mary High School with 2,180 yards and 21 touchdowns. I think that both will add to an offense that got better as the year went on. I think they need to extend drives and keep the defense off the field. The Bulls ran the ball very well the passing game needs to improve. From what I read about all of the over additions’ things are looking good for USF in 2022. We will have to see with the start of the season in September.
