Free Agency: Simulator Proves Difficult Negotiations Ahead For Browns

Read Time:5 Minute, 57 Second
Let’s think about sports again and not focus on Coronavirus. NFL free agency and the draft are expected to start on time. The Browns currently have the seventh most cap space in the NFL with $61,964,940. The team will likely release Olivier Vernon. If that happens, the Browns will have $85,248,193 in total cap space. Cleveland should be a big spender in free agency.
According to the Fanspeak cap space simulator, re-signing wide receiver Rashard Higgins will prove to be difficult. Offering a $7 million salary for seven years and 80% guaranteed money will result in a rejection. Don’t expect the Browns to keep Higgins unless they offer a contract worth at least $7.5 million a year for 5-7 years. Even attempting to resign cornerback Phillip Gaines to a $49 million for 7 years with 90% guaranteed money is impossible. Based on that data, the remaining Browns free agents will be on the free agency market.

A few things were made clear by these simulations.
1. The Browns may have the space to sign just about anyone but overpaying by leaps and bounds won’t result in signings.
2. Most free agents will look for deals between two to five years. Six to seven-year deals will result in rejected offers.
3. Most top players will sign deals worth between $10-18 million
4. Although reports link top-name free agents like Jack Conklin and Anthony Harris to the Browns, these players will be next to impossible to sign unless General Manager Andrew Berry sells them on team vision and role on the team.
Although the simulator predicted most deals were rejected, this gives the fans, media, and front office personnel a better idea of what to expect as well as prepare for.
