The American Conference could produce another College Football Playoff surprise. However, the road to the playoff became much harder in 2026. The CFP now guarantees one spot to the highest-ranked champion from six conferences. That group includes the American, Pac-12, Mountain West, Sun Belt, MAC, and Conference USA. Therefore, American Conference teams must separate themselves nationally. Several programs have enough talent to make that happen. UTSA stands out as the strongest candidate. However, Navy, Memphis, Tulane, and South Florida also deserve consideration.
- UTSA Roadrunners
UTSA looks like the American’s most intriguing playoff contender. The Roadrunners return head coach Jeff Traylor. They also bring back quarterback Owen McCown. That combination gives UTSA something rare in today’s college game. McCown started all 13 games for UTSA last season. He completed 277 passes for 2,995 yards and 30 touchdowns. He also completed 67.6 percent of his passes. That experience could become extremely valuable this season. UTSA also retained defensive coordinator Jess Loep. The Roadrunners made significant roster changes during the offseason. Traylor also changed his approach to roster building. He added veteran transfers while emphasizing experience and toughness. UTSA finished only 7-6 last season. Still, the Roadrunners have a chance to make a major jump. Their schedule includes Texas, Tulane, Navy, and South Florida. Winning those games could transform their playoff résumé.
- Navy Midshipmen
Navy might have the most interesting path among American contenders. The Midshipmen bring back one of college football’s toughest identities. Their option offense can frustrate opponents for four quarters. Navy also enters the season with significant continuity. Current American Conference projections place Navy among the conference favorites. One preseason betting projection actually lists Navy as the favorite. That respect matters. Navy also has a schedule that could create major opportunities. The Midshipmen face Notre Dame during the season. A victory there would give Navy an enormous national boost. They also need to navigate the American’s difficult conference race. If Navy wins the league, the playoff committee must take notice. An undefeated or one-loss Navy team could become a major story.
- Memphis Tigers
Memphis has plenty of experience competing near the top. The Tigers have also developed a reputation for explosive offenses. However, Memphis enters 2026 with significant changes. Charles Huff takes over as the program’s new head coach. The Tigers also lost important players from last season. Still, Memphis remains one of the American’s most talented programs. The schedule provides an early opportunity to build playoff momentum. Memphis opens Week 0 against UNLV. The Tigers then face Boise State in Week 2. Those games could carry enormous weight nationally. A strong start would immediately strengthen Memphis’ playoff argument. Memphis also faces Tulane later in the season. That matchup could have major conference championship implications.
- Tulane Green Wave
Tulane cannot get overlooked after last season. The Green Wave reached the College Football Playoff in 2025. They finished the season with an 11-3 record. Tulane also won the American Conference championship. However, the program faces major changes. Jon Sumrall left Tulane for another coaching opportunity. The Green Wave also lost important players. That creates plenty of uncertainty entering 2026. Still, Tulane already understands what a playoff season requires. The program also proved it can compete nationally. That experience could help the Green Wave navigate another difficult season. Tulane faces Duke early in the season. The Green Wave also host UTSA later in conference play. Those games could determine Tulane’s playoff chances.
- South Florida Bulls
South Florida might have the biggest question mark. The Bulls finished 9-4 last season. They also went 6-2 in American Conference play. However, USF lost head coach Alex Golesh to Auburn. Brian Hartline now takes over the program. That change creates plenty of uncertainty. Still, South Florida has shown significant growth recently. The Bulls have also built enough talent to compete in the American. Hartline brings an impressive recruiting background to Tampa. His challenge involves turning that talent into consistent production. South Florida also has a major opportunity against UTSA. That October matchup could have conference championship implications. If USF starts quickly, the Bulls could surprise nationally.
The American Has a Real CFP Chance
The American faces an enormous challenge in 2026. Only one team from the six non-power conferences receives a guaranteed spot. Therefore, the conference champion must build an impressive résumé. That makes nonconference games extremely important. UTSA plays Texas. Navy plays Notre Dame. Memphis plays Boise State. Tulane plays Duke. Those games could decide the American’s national reputation. The conference also has plenty of internal competition. That creates another problem for playoff hopefuls. A strong team could still finish with multiple losses.
However, one dominant team could separate itself. UTSA appears to have the best combination of continuity and quarterback experience. Navy could become dangerous because of its unique offensive style. Memphis has the potential to build a strong résumé early. Tulane has recent playoff experience. South Florida also has enough talent to surprise people. UTSA Has the Best Chance If I had to choose one American team, I would take UTSA. McCown gives the Roadrunners an experienced quarterback.
Traylor also provides continuity at a critical position. UTSA knows it needs a special season. The Roadrunners cannot afford to waste opportunities. They need to beat Texas or collect several strong conference victories. They also need to win the American championship. Then, the playoff committee must rank them above every other Group of Six contender. That challenge remains enormous. Still, the opportunity exists. The American has five legitimate teams capable of making noise.
UTSA simply has the strongest case right now. If the Roadrunners put everything together, they could crash the CFP. And if they reach the playoff, nobody should expect an easy first-round matchup.
