25 College Football Players with the Most to Prove in 2026

The 2026 college football season brings pressure for several major stars. Some players need stronger seasons to improve their NFL draft stock. Others could become household names with breakout performances. Sports Illustrated ranked 25 players with the most to prove. The list also highlights players with plenty to gain. Jeremiah Smith leads the group after another outstanding season at Ohio State. Trinidad Chambliss and Leonard Moore follow closely behind. The list features quarterbacks, receivers, defensive linemen and defensive backs. It also includes several players entering new programs. That makes 2026 especially important for their development. KJ Bolden — Georgia DB

Matayo Uiagalelei — Oregon EDGE

Uiagalelei remains one of Oregon’s most talented defenders. However, his sack total dropped from 10.5 to six last season. He also recorded 9.5 tackles for loss. He returned to Oregon instead of entering the NFL draft. Therefore, 2026 gives him another chance to dominate.

LJ Martin — BYU RB

Martin quietly produced one of the nation’s best rushing seasons. He ranked 10th nationally in carries during 2025. He also ranked 11th in rushing yards. Martin won Big 12 Offensive Player of the Year. Now, he returns for his senior season with more expectations.

Carter Smith — Indiana OL

Smith helped Indiana protect its quarterbacks during an explosive season. The Hoosiers allowed only 22 sacks across 15 games. Smith earned consensus All-American honors. He also won Big Ten Offensive Lineman of the Year. Indiana returns four offensive-line starters in 2026. That group could become one of the nation’s best.

Trey White — Texas Tech EDGE

White arrives at Texas Tech after starring at San Diego State. He recorded 29 tackles for loss during his last two seasons. He also produced 19.5 sacks during that span. Texas Tech lost several major defensive stars to the NFL. White now has an opportunity to become the defense’s centerpiece.

Koi Perich — Oregon S

Perich brings tremendous versatility to Oregon’s defense. He recorded six career interceptions at Minnesota. He also accumulated 128 career tackles. Perich contributed as a return specialist as well. Now, Oregon expects him to replace Dillon Thieneman.

Demond Williams Jr. — Washington QB

Williams enters 2026 with plenty of talent and pressure. He threw for more than 3,000 yards last season. He also rushed for more than 600 yards. Williams combined for 31 touchdowns during the season. However, he committed 11 turnovers against FBS opponents. Cutting those mistakes could unlock another level.

Tyrique Tucker — Indiana DL

Tucker became an important defensive player after transferring from James Madison. He recorded six sacks and 12 tackles for loss. He also earned third-team All-American recognition. Tucker has improved every season. Another jump could make him an elite defensive tackle nationally.

Arch Manning — Texas QB

Manning faced enormous expectations entering his first season as Texas’ starter. His opening stretch created plenty of questions. He threw five interceptions during his first five games. Texas also lost twice during that opening stretch. Then Manning found his rhythm. Texas went 7–1 across its final eight games. Manning threw 15 touchdowns during that stretch. He also added five rushing scores. His Citrus Bowl performance further raised expectations. He produced 373 total yards and four touchdowns against Michigan.

Jordan Seaton — LSU OT

Seaton spent his first two seasons protecting Colorado quarterbacks. He won the starting left tackle job as a freshman. Seaton allowed only two sacks during that first season. He later earned second-team All-Big 12 honors. Now, he moves to LSU and the SEC. His biggest challenge involves facing elite pass rushers weekly.

Cam Coleman — Texas WR

Coleman joins Texas after two productive seasons at Auburn. He caught 56 passes for 708 yards last season. He also scored eight touchdowns as a freshman. Quarterback play limited his production at Auburn. Now, he gets Arch Manning throwing him the football. His speed and hands give Texas another explosive weapon. A breakout season could dramatically improve his NFL stock.

Xavier Atkins — Auburn LB

Atkins became one of Auburn’s brightest spots last season. He led the SEC with 17 tackles for loss. His ability allows him to attack from multiple positions. Now, he must adjust to Alex Golesh’s new system. Auburn kept Atkins because his leadership matters. His 2026 season could define the Tigers’ defense.

Charlie Becker — Indiana WR

Indiana lost Elijah Sarratt and Omar Cooper Jr. to the NFL. Becker now has an opportunity to become the team’s top receiver. He emerged as a major target late last season. Becker caught seven passes for 118 yards against Penn State. He then produced 14 catches during Indiana’s postseason run. Becker also totaled 290 yards and two touchdowns in those games.

John Henry Daley — Michigan EDGE

Daley followed Kyle Whittingham from Utah to Michigan. He emerged as a dominant pass rusher last season. Daley recorded 11.5 sacks in only 11 games. He also registered 17.5 tackles for loss. However, an Achilles injury ended his regular season early. He now enters 2026 with major expectations at Michigan.

Darian Mensah — Miami QB

Mensah enters Miami after a remarkable season at Duke. He threw for nearly 4,000 yards in 2025. He also produced 34 total touchdowns. Mensah led the ACC in passing yards and touchdowns. Now, he takes over an offense with championship expectations. His arrival could give Miami another elite quarterback. The pressure will remain enormous from his first snap.

Kewan Lacy — Ole Miss RB

Lacy enjoyed a spectacular 2025 campaign at Ole Miss. He led the FBS with 306 carries. Lacy finished second nationally with 24 rushing touchdowns. He also rushed for 1,567 yards. Those numbers earned him first-team All-American honors. Now, Lacy enters 2026 as a major award candidate. The Doak Walker Award could sit within his reach.

Dylan Stewart — South Carolina EDGE

Stewart possesses tremendous physical talent. The 6-foot-5 edge rusher weighs 245 pounds. However, his production dipped during South Carolina’s late-season struggles. He recorded only one sack during his final five games. Opposing offenses also focused heavily on him. Now, Stewart must rediscover his freshman-year dominance.

Dante Moore — Oregon QB

Moore could have entered the NFL draft after 2025. Instead, he returned to Oregon for another season. That decision creates major expectations. Moore also faces several new challenges in 2026. Oregon lost offensive coordinator Will Stein. The Ducks also lost Malik Benson and Kenyon Sadiq. Moore must prove he can dominate against elite competition. His performance against Indiana remains an obvious area for improvement.

CJ Carr — Notre Dame QB

Carr enters his second season as Notre Dame’s starter. He showed plenty of promise during his first campaign. Carr averaged 10.07 air yards per attempt. Only Fernando Mendoza posted a higher FBS figure. He also threw only six interceptions. However, Notre Dame lost star running back Jeremiyah Love. Carr will therefore carry more responsibility in 2026. A strong season could push him into the national spotlight.

Colin Simmons — Texas EDGE

Simmons has already established himself as an elite pass rusher. He enters 2026 as the active FBS leader in career sacks. Simmons has 21 career sacks entering the season. He also recorded 15.5 tackles for loss last year. His explosiveness makes him difficult to block. Another major season could make him college football’s best player.

Julian Sayin — Ohio State QB

Sayin enjoyed an excellent first season as Ohio State’s starter. He led the FBS with a 77% completion rate. His accuracy gives Ohio State an important advantage. However, his postseason performance exposed some concerns. Sayin took 10 sacks across two postseason games. He also threw three interceptions during those losses. Now, Sayin must prove he can handle increased pressure. Another strong season could boost his NFL draft stock significantly.

Malachi Toney — Miami WR

Toney became one of college football’s biggest breakout stars. He led the NCAA with 109 receptions as a freshman. He also brings elite speed and open-field ability. Leonard Moore — Notre Dame CB

Jeremiah Smith — Ohio State WR

Smith enters 2026 with perhaps the highest expectations nationally. He already owns an extraordinary college résumé. Smith led the Big Ten with 87 receptions last season. He also produced 1,243 receiving yards. He became a unanimous All-American after his sophomore season. Now, he can challenge several Ohio State career records.
