MILWAUKEE — The team with the best record in MLB just proved exactly why they are so difficult to put away. So goes the game of baseball.
Trailing late in Game 2 of the National League Division Series, the Milwaukee Brewers engineered a spectacular late-game comeback, walking off the San Diego Padres 4-3 in front of a raucous crowd at American Family Field. The thrilling victory gives the Brewers a commanding 2-0 series lead, pushing the Padres to the brink of elimination as the series shifts to Southern California.
Here is a detailed breakdown of how Milwaukee pulled off the dramatic Game 2 victory.
A Pitcher’s Duel Early
For the majority of the afternoon, the game was defined by excellent starting pitching.
Padres starter Michael King was brilliant, giving San Diego exactly what they needed to stay in the contest. King pitched five strong innings, allowing just three hits and one earned run while striking out six Brewers and issuing zero walks. Opposite him, Brewers starter Logan Henderson was equally effective, matching King by allowing just one earned run on two hits over his five innings of work, striking out four.
San Diego Builds a Lead
With the starters out of the game, the Padres’ offense began to piece together crucial runs against the Milwaukee bullpen.
San Diego leaned heavily on veteran Ty France, who delivered a massive performance in the middle of the order. France finished the day 2-for-3 with two crucial RBIs to give the Padres the late lead. Dustin Harris also contributed an RBI, and Luis Campusano sparked a rally by scoring a run on his lone hit of the game. It appeared the Padres had successfully stolen a road game to even the series.

The Walk-Off Collapse
The storyline of the game completely flipped in the final frames.
Desperate to close out the game, the Padres turned to hard-throwing reliever Mason Miller. However, Miller completely lost his command. Across 1.2 innings of work, Miller surrendered a hit and issued three devastating walks. Despite his obvious struggles to find the strike zone, the Padres’ coaching staff opted to leave him in the game—a decision that drew massive criticism from the San Diego fanbase immediately following the loss.
The Brewers, who posted a franchise-record 103 wins in the regular season, showed incredible plate discipline. Christian Yelich was the catalyst, finishing 1-for-3 with a walk and coming around to score two massive runs. Sal Frelick worked two walks of his own and added an RBI, while Jackson Chourio provided the heavy lifting, driving in two runs to complete the comeback.
Ultimately, Miller’s lack of control proved fatal, as he surrendered the final two earned runs that allowed the Brewers to secure the 4-3 walk-off victory.
What’s Next?
The Brewers are now playing with massive momentum. Having already survived a difficult regular-season series against the Padres in August, Milwaukee has effectively flipped the script in October. With a 2-0 lead, even former Red Sox legend David Ortiz declared on the postgame broadcast that the series is a “wrap”.
For the Padres, it is do-or-die. The series now shifts to Petco Park for Game 3 on Tuesday night, where San Diego will have to figure out how to stabilize their bullpen and quiet a Brewers lineup that absolutely refuses to quit.
