The Tampa Bay Lightning needed a response after an ugly opening-night performance in New York. They delivered one Saturday night. Tampa Bay defeated the Washington Capitals 3-1 at Benchmark International Arena. The victory gave the Lightning their first win of the 2026-27 season. It also provided a much better performance following Thursday’s 5-1 loss against the New York Rangers. The Lightning controlled the opening period and established their preferred style immediately. Tampa Bay outshot Washington 14-4 during the first 20 minutes.
Charle-Edouard D’Astous started the scoring just 2:25 into the game. Brandon Hagel and Emil Lilleberg collected assists on D’Astous’ first goal of the season. The early goal gave the home crowd something to celebrate quickly. More importantly, Tampa Bay continued attacking instead of sitting on the lead. Conor Geekie doubled the advantage at 16:30. Geekie finished a one-timer after Hagel found him with a pass. Jake Guentzel also earned an assist on Geekie’s first goal this season. Hagel finished the opening period with two assists. His aggressive play helped Tampa Bay create pressure throughout the first 20 minutes.
Capitals Answer in Second Period
Washington finally generated a response during the second period. Justin Sourdif redirected Jakob Chychrun’s slap pass past Andrei Vasilevskiy at 7:03. Boone Jenner earned the secondary assist on Sourdif’s first goal of the season. Suddenly, Tampa Bay’s two-goal advantage had disappeared. However, the Lightning never allowed Washington to completely take control. Tampa Bay still held a 21-12 advantage in shots after two periods. The Lightning also limited Washington’s opportunities around Vasilevskiy’s crease.
Vasilevskiy became especially important during the third period. Washington pushed harder while searching for the tying goal. Ryan Leonard, Chychrun and Sourdif created opportunities during that push. However, Vasilevskiy kept Tampa Bay ahead. He also denied Tom Wilson on a dangerous redirection during a Washington power play. Alex Ovechkin created the opportunity with an excellent pass. The Lightning’s penalty killers successfully protected their one-goal advantage.

Guentzel Seals the Victory
Washington eventually pulled Charlie Lindgren for an extra attacker. Tampa Bay took advantage. Guentzel scored into the empty net at 17:55, giving Tampa Bay a 3-1 advantage. Nikita Kucherov and former Capitals defenseman John Carlson collected assists. Carlson’s assist added another storyline to an already emotional evening. The veteran defenseman faced Washington for the first time after spending 17 seasons with the organization. He helped Washington win the Stanley Cup in 2018.
Carlson joined Tampa Bay during the offseason after finishing last season with Anaheim. His first Lightning home game came against the franchise that defined his career. Meanwhile, Guentzel’s insurance goal finally gave the Lightning some breathing room. Washington continued creating opportunities after pulling Lindgren again. However, Vasilevskiy refused to surrender another goal. Tampa Bay finished with a 30-20 advantage in shots. That number reflected how effectively the Lightning controlled much of the night. Vasilevskiy stopped 19 of Washington’s 20 shots. His performance helped Tampa Bay close out the victory after Sourdif narrowed the lead.
Lightning Deliver Needed Response
The result represented a major improvement from Thursday’s season opener. New York overwhelmed Tampa Bay 5-1 at Madison Square Garden. The Lightning also went 0-for-7 on the power play during that loss. Against Washington, Tampa Bay looked faster and more engaged from the opening faceoff. The Lightning scored twice during the opening period. They also controlled possession and forced Washington to defend for extended stretches.
Furthermore, Tampa Bay received contributions from throughout the lineup. D’Astous opened the scoring from the blue line. Geekie provided another goal from the bottom six. Hagel collected two assists. Then, Tampa Bay’s established stars helped finish the job. Kucherov assisted on Guentzel’s insurance goal. Vasilevskiy protected the lead when Washington applied late pressure. The Lightning also kept Ovechkin from finding the back of the net. That accomplishment always matters against the NHL’s all-time goals leader.
Tampa Bay will certainly want more production from its power play moving forward. However, Saturday represented a considerable improvement in several important areas. Most importantly, the Lightning responded after a disappointing season opener. They played aggressively from the beginning. They defended their lead when Washington pushed back. Finally, they received strong goaltending when the game tightened. The season remains extremely young. However, Tampa Bay looked much more like itself during its home opener. After a forgettable night in New York, the Lightning gave their home crowd something worth celebrating. The Bolts are finally in the win column.
