Pinellas County high school football delivered plenty of action this past week. Several teams made major statements during Week 3. Clearwater, East Lake, Largo, and Northeast all picked up impressive victories. Meanwhile, Pinellas Park also earned an important win over Dunedin. The week featured blowouts, defensive battles, and several strong offensive performances. Here is a look at the biggest results from around the county.
Clearwater Stays Perfect
Clearwater continued its impressive start with a 26-0 victory over Countryside. The Tornadoes improved to 3-0 with the shutout. Clearwater controlled the game from the opening quarter. The Tornadoes scored 14 points in the first quarter. They added another 12 points during the fourth quarter. Meanwhile, the defense kept Countryside off the scoreboard. Quarterback J. Glenn completed nine of 18 passes. He finished with 132 passing yards and two touchdowns. Glenn also rushed eight times for 64 yards and one touchdown. Daimarion Chambers added 84 receiving yards. Clearwater now has plenty of momentum heading into Week 4. The Tornadoes will face St. Petersburg next Friday.
East Lake Dominates Osceola
East Lake produced one of the week’s biggest wins. The Eagles crushed Osceola 55-7 on Friday night. East Lake controlled the game throughout the night. The Eagles scored 55 points against an Osceola team that struggled offensively. Osceola managed only 49 passing yards and 148 rushing yards. The Warriors also struggled to slow down East Lake’s offense. The victory gives East Lake another strong result early this season. It also shows why the Eagles remain one of Pinellas County’s teams to watch.
Largo Rolls Past Tarpon Springs
Largo also delivered an impressive performance Friday. The Packers defeated Tarpon Springs 46-12 on the road. Both teams entered the matchup with 2-0 records. However, Largo quickly took control of the contest. The Packers had already defeated Northeast and Pinellas Park. They now own another impressive victory against a previously unbeaten opponent. Tarpon Springs entered the game after wins over Palm Harbor University and Hollins. Largo ended that perfect start in convincing fashion.
Northeast Finds Its Offense
Northeast also enjoyed a strong Friday night. The Vikings defeated Indian Rocks Christian 48-17. The Vikings bounced back after dropping their previous two games. Their offense finally found a rhythm against Indian Rocks Christian. Northeast scored 48 points while holding the Eagles to 17. The victory gives the Vikings some much-needed momentum. They will look to build on that performance during the next few weeks.
Pinellas Park Beats Dunedin
Pinellas Park earned a hard-fought 14-6 victory over Dunedin. The Patriots improved to 1-2 with the win. The Patriots relied heavily on their running game. Pinellas Park finished with 206 rushing yards. The defense also played an important role. Dunedin managed only six points during the contest. The win should provide a confidence boost for Pinellas Park. The Patriots have already faced several challenging opponents this season.
Seminole Holds Off Hollins
Seminole also picked up a Week 3 victory. The Seminoles defeated Hollins 22-14 on Friday night. Hollins kept the game competitive throughout the night. However, Seminole made enough plays to secure the victory. The result gives Seminole another positive result during the early season. Hollins, meanwhile, will look to regroup after the loss.
Gibbs Falls Against East Bay
Gibbs faced another difficult test Friday night. The Gladiators lost to East Bay 26-14. Gibbs entered the matchup with a 1-1 record. East Bay eventually created enough separation to secure the victory. Still, Gibbs showed some promising signs on defense. Ronald Williams led the Gladiators with a strong performance. Gibbs will now look toward its next opportunity to get back into the win column.
Shorecrest Suffers Its First Loss
Shorecrest Prep also experienced its first setback of the season. The Chargers fell to Countryside Christian 32-12. Shorecrest opened the season with two impressive victories. The Chargers shut out Foundation Christian before beating Donahue Catholic. However, Countryside Christian ended that unbeaten start. Shorecrest will now try to respond during its next game.
St. Petersburg Starts September Strong
St. Petersburg also opened the week with a notable victory. The Green Devils defeated Palm Harbor University 13-0 on Thursday. The defense delivered a dominant performance. Palm Harbor University failed to score throughout the contest. That shutout gives St. Petersburg plenty of confidence. The Green Devils now prepare for another important matchup against Clearwater.
Looking Ahead
Week 3 gave Pinellas County fans plenty to discuss. Clearwater and East Lake continued their strong starts. Largo also made a major statement against Tarpon Springs. Northeast showed signs of turning its season around. Meanwhile, Pinellas Park earned a valuable win against Dunedin. St. Petersburg also made an early statement with its shutout. The county still has plenty of football left to play. However, Week 3 provided some early clues about the teams to watch. Clearwater currently owns one of the county’s most impressive starts. East Lake and Largo also look like serious contenders. As Week 4 approaches, the competition should only get tougher. Pinellas County football remains wide open, and several teams have plenty to prove.
