The New England Patriots finally have their initial 53-man roster. Head coach Mike Vrabel and his staff faced several difficult decisions. However, the team reached the NFL’s deadline Sunday evening. New England started the weekend with 91 players. The Patriots needed to make at least 38 moves. Instead, the team made 42 transactions before the deadline. The final moves created a roster built around quarterback Drake Maye. The Patriots also kept several promising young players. Meanwhile, several veterans and young players saw their seasons take a different turn.
Patriots Make Several Tough Cuts
New England waived 31 players during the final roster process. Those players must clear waivers before they can join the Patriots’ practice squad. Among the notable names, the Patriots waived running backs Jam Miller and Lan Larison. They also waived linebacker Chad Muma and safety John Saunders Jr. Wide receivers Nick DeGennaro, Kyle Dixon, Cameron Dorner, and Tejhaun Palmer also missed the roster. The offensive line lost Darrian Dalcourt, JonDarius Morgan, Jacob Rizy, Lorenz Metz, and Mekhi Butler. Defensively, New England waived Bradyn Swinson, Eric Gregory, Isaiah Iton, and Casey Rogers. The team also waived cornerbacks Marcellas Dial Jr., Kobee Minor, and Brandon Crossley.
Those players now face the uncertainty of the waiver process. Some could eventually return to New England through the practice squad. The Patriots also released six vested veterans. That group included running back Hassan Haskins, running back JaMycal Hasty, and tackle James Hudson III. New England also released edge rusher Jesse Luketa, cornerback Kindle Vildor, and punter Matt Haack. The Vildor decision stands out among those veteran cuts. He joined the Patriots during free agency and competed for a cornerback spot. Instead, two rookies earned roster spots ahead of him. Karon Prunty and Channing Canada helped push Vildor out of the competition.
Patriots Keep Three Quarterbacks
The biggest quarterback decision involved rookie Behren Morton. The Patriots selected Morton in the seventh round of the 2026 NFL Draft. New England ultimately kept him behind Drake Maye and Tommy DeVito. Maye remains the unquestioned centerpiece of the offense. DeVito gives the Patriots an experienced backup option. Morton provides another developmental piece for offensive coordinator Josh McDaniels. Morton also gives New England an emergency quarterback option on game days. That decision could prove important later. Teams rarely want to risk losing a developmental quarterback through the waiver process. Therefore, New England chose to keep Morton on its active roster.
Running Back Room Gets Interesting
The Patriots entered camp with several candidates for the third running back spot. However, New England ultimately chose a different route. The Patriots acquired Corey Kiner from the Arizona Cardinals during roster-cutdown weekend. They sent Arizona a 2028 seventh-round pick for the running back. Kiner joins Rhamondre Stevenson and TreVeyon Henderson. That gives New England a talented three-man running back group. Kiner also brings special teams experience to the roster. He rushed 39 times for 180 yards during the preseason. He also scored two touchdowns during that stretch. Meanwhile, Jam Miller, Lan Larison, Hassan Haskins, and JaMycal Hasty missed the final roster.
Wide Receiver Room Looks Strong
The Patriots also made some interesting decisions at wide receiver. New England kept six receivers on its initial roster. A.J. Brown and Romeo Doubs headline the group after their offseason arrivals. DeMario Douglas gives the Patriots another established offensive weapon. Mack Hollins provides veteran experience and size. Kyle Williams also earned a roster spot after an impressive preseason. Efton Chism III rounds out the group. Williams particularly helped himself during the preseason. He caught touchdown passes of 69 and 45 yards. He also averaged 4.37 yards per route during three preseason games. That performance helped create another difficult decision. New England traded Kayshon Boutte to the Houston Texans before final cuts. That move helped clarify the wide receiver competition.
Offensive Line Adds Walter Rouse
The Patriots also made a late move to improve their offensive line depth. New England acquired Walter Rouse from the Minnesota Vikings. The Patriots sent Minnesota a 2027 sixth-round pick. New England received Rouse and a 2027 seventh-round pick. Rouse brings additional tackle depth to the roster. The move became more important after Marcus Bryant landed on injured reserve. Bryant received a designation to return, so he can return later this season. However, he must miss at least four games first. Rouse now joins a group featuring Will Campbell and Morgan Moses. The Patriots also kept Alijah Vera-Tucker, Jared Wilson, Mike Onwenu, and several other linemen. That group gives New England more stability than it had entering last season.
Defense Still Has Questions
The Patriots kept several major defensive pieces. Christian Gonzalez leads the cornerback group. Kevin Byard anchors the safety room. Christian Barmore remains a major piece along the defensive line. However, New England still faces questions at edge rusher. Harold Landry III will begin the season on the PUP list. He must miss at least four games before returning. Brenden Schooler will also miss at least four games. The Patriots placed their special teams standout on the non-football injury list. Marcus Bryant joins them on injured reserve. Those absences could force younger players into bigger roles early. The Patriots currently have Dre’Mont Jones, Elijah Ponder, and Gabe Jacas competing for edge snaps. That group will face plenty of pressure.
The Roster Is Set, But Changes Will Come
The Patriots now have their initial 53-man roster. Still, the roster will likely change before Week 1. New England holds the 31st position in the waiver claim order. The team earned that position after reaching the Super Bowl last season. That spot makes it harder to add players through waivers. Therefore, the Patriots could focus on their own cuts and practice squad additions. The roster already features plenty of intriguing pieces. Maye gives New England a young quarterback to build around. Brown and Doubs strengthen the receiving corps. Stevenson and Henderson give the offense explosive running back options. The defense still needs to prove it can handle injuries. For now, though, Vrabel has his team. The Patriots made their toughest decisions, and the 53-man roster stands.Next comes the part that matters most. New England must turn this roster into another playoff run.
This team were the AFC Champions a year ago and I like the decisions that they made to make it back and maybe win the Super Bowl in 2027.
