Scottie Scheffler continues to sit atop the golf world, holding the No. 1 position in The Power 18 Golf Rankings from January through August. However, the 2026 season has provided a different challenge for the world’s best player. Scheffler has dominated the sport for several years, but this season has tested him more than anyone expected.
Scheffler opened the year with a victory, but he has not captured another title since then. Instead, he has finished runner-up five times. His latest second-place finish came at the 3M Open, where Jackson Koivun defeated him. Scheffler also fell short against elite competition throughout the season. Rory McIlroy beat him at the Masters, Matt Fitzpatrick won the RBC Heritage, Cameron Young claimed the Cadillac Championship, and Viktor Hovland captured the Travelers Championship.
Even with those losses, Scheffler remains the most consistent golfer in the world. His talent and overall performance still separate him from most players. However, small weaknesses have prevented him from adding more wins. His wedge play has lacked precision, and his putting has caused problems during international events. He also struggled with slow starts throughout the year.
Additionally, Scheffler entered the postseason without recording a 54-hole lead. That statistic stands out because leading after three rounds often creates the best path toward victory. Scheffler’s streak of 35 straight top-25 finishes also ended after he missed the cut at the Scottish Open. Still, he quickly responded with a strong performance at The Open before finishing second again at the 3M Open.
Meanwhile, several other golfers have taken advantage of their opportunities. Matt Fitzpatrick and Chris Gotterup lead the season with multiple victories. Cameron Young and Wyndham Clark also remain serious contenders for Player of the Year. The FedEx Cup Playoffs will give every top player another chance to make a lasting impact.
Rory McIlroy remains second in the rankings despite an inconsistent season. McIlroy has struggled to avoid high scores, recording rounds of 72 or higher in nearly every PGA Tour event. Those mistakes often hurt him during third rounds, where tournaments can change quickly. He played well at the Scottish Open but struggled at Royal Birkdale. His approach play has also declined recently.
Cameron Young moved into the third spot after a strong stretch. Young nearly won The Open before Ryan Fox made a dramatic birdie on the final hole. That birdie kept Young out of a playoff by one stroke. Young later continued his momentum with a top-10 finish at the Rocket Classic. However, his putting has not reached the same level as earlier in the season.
Fitzpatrick ranks fourth after an impressive year filled with strong finishes. He challenged for the title at the Scottish Open and recorded top-five finishes at the Travelers Championship and Canadian Open. However, his major championship results left him disappointed. He missed the cut at The Open after struggling from the beginning.
Sam Burns holds the fifth position after an outstanding major championship season. Burns matched Scheffler with a 20-under cumulative score across the four majors. Despite that performance, he did not win a major title. Burns entered the final round of The Open with the lead but struggled early. Ryan Fox’s strong finish also changed the tournament’s outcome.
Tommy Fleetwood continues his strong form and ranks sixth. Fleetwood finished tied for fourth at Royal Birkdale, earning his 11th top-20 finish in only 18 worldwide starts. His entire game remains consistent, but he needs stronger weekend positioning to win more often.
Xander Schauffele sits seventh after another impressive response season. The two-time major champion finished runner-up at the Rocket Classic and recorded top-20 finishes in all four majors. He continues searching for a return to the Tour Championship after missing the event last season.
Chris Gotterup ranks eighth after a breakout campaign. He earned his third victory of the season at the John Deere Classic. Gotterup also performed well at the Scottish Open and The Open. Although he missed the cut at the Rocket Classic, his overall season remains impressive.
Collin Morikawa enters the postseason as a player to watch. After dealing with a back injury, Morikawa appears healthy again. His iron play has returned to an elite level, and his putting has improved. Wyndham Clark remains unpredictable but dangerous after producing one of the best stretches of golf from late May through July.
The rest of the rankings feature several accomplished players making postseason pushes. Russell Henley continues producing consistent results despite not relying on power. Jon Rahm remains talented but has struggled through his worst statistical season since 2018. Si Woo Kim has enjoyed the best year of his career but still needs a victory.
Ludvig Åberg, Bryson DeChambeau, Viktor Hovland, Hideki Matsuyama, and Ryan Gerard also remain important names heading into the playoffs. Matsuyama has regained confidence after fixing issues with his driver. Gerard has produced four top-10 finishes in his last seven starts.
Ultimately, Scheffler remains the standard in professional golf. However, the 2026 season has shown that other stars can challenge him. With the FedEx Cup Playoffs ahead, one major performance could change the Player of the Year race and define the season’s biggest story.
