USF Bulls Spring sports continue about halfway through for each team. The campus is packed with students and parents to support their peers and children. In some cases, the teams might all play on the same day. Both the lacrosse team and softball continue their hit strides. The baseball team is adjusting under first-year head coach Mitch Hannahs. Let’s look back at how the three sports have been doing over the last couple of weeks.
Lacrosse
The last time I talked about St. Bonaventure they won. Well, they have continued to have a great first season. There have been three games that have all happened at home which draws decent crowds. The first game was against the Xavier Musketeers on Bark at the Park and Salute to Service. In this game, the Bulls scored a new game-high 20 goals and allowed the fewest goals in four with 11 different players scoring a goal. The next game came a couple of days later versus the Bucknell Bisons. It was no different than the game versus Xavier. USF won the game 16-8 earning their sixth win on the year. The next game took place on a Saturday the same day as the baseball team was playing. It was a giveaway day, and they beat the Temple Owls 15-9 earning their seventh win.
Softball
After the doubleheader with the Siena Saints, they played eight games. In those games, they went 7-1. Five of the seven games were at USF Softball Stadium and the only loss came to the UAB Blazers by one run, 7-6. After that one-run loss, they would take the next two games versus the Blazers. The first one went nine innings and the Bulls won 4-3 and shut out UAB 6-0 to win their first conference series of the year. In between that series, they won a doubleheader against the Bryant Bulldogs which ended early as the Bulls defeated them 11-2. In the second half of the doubleheader, they played the Central Michigan Chippewas and that game would be much closer as the Bulls won 2-1.
The next series would be in conference and on the road versus the Charlotte 49ers. The same 49ers that gave USF fits last year. The only game out of three that was close was the first one that the Bulls won 3-2. The final two games of the series were another doubleheader. Both games took place in the afternoon. The 49ers struggled scoring four runs and giving up 21 to USF. At this point, the Bulls are 5-1 in conference play. They are off to a great start.
Baseball
This is the 60th season of USF baseball. The Bulls lost two out of three to the UCF Knights. The team had past alumni come and show up to watch the current USF Bulls. After the UCF series, they had a game postponed against the Florida Gulf Coast Eagles that will be made up on the 18th. The next three games came against the Villanova Wildcats and the only game the Bulls won was the first. The two losses were close. The next team that came to Red McEwen Field was the Maryland Terrapins. They lost to the Terrapins in game one by three runs 5-2. The next game was close, and they won 4-3, and the blowout win came in game three 15-8. At this point, the Bulls are one game over .500 at 9-8. Let’s see what happens in the next couple of weeks.
