It has been a great week for USF Athletics in lacrosse, baseball, and softball. The basketball teams are drawing a crowd at the Yueling Center. The lacrosse team plays on the soccer field right across the street from both the baseball and softball fields. The soccer field is in the shadow of the Lee Roy Selmon training center an indoor facility that the USF football team uses for many different things. Also, the new football stadium which could be opening in 2028 is exciting the football program. Let’s see how the first few weeks have gone for lacrosse, baseball, and softball.
USF Lacrosse
It took a long time for the team to start playing games that were not exhibitions. Finally, the first game took place on February 7th, and it was a sellout. It was great to see the fans show up for the program. The game was against Kennesaw State and they flat-out dominated them. The USF Bulls would go on to win 19-6 and after the game, they dunked their coach with Gatorade which many coaches say is the best bath in the world. Four days later, they played their first road game and once again showed how good the team was beating Mercer 11-8. On Valentine’s Day, they hosted Lehigh and took home another win, 17-7. They also hosted one of the top lacrosse programs in the Florida Gators, the first loss of the season for USF falling 18-11.
USF Softball
Out of the three teams this season, the softball team has gotten off to the hottest start. So far, the ladies have played in 12 games. The first five games were part of the USF-Rawlings Invitational and in these games, the Bulls went 3-2 overall. USF won the first two games defeating Delaware and Illinois State in the Delaware game they won 9-1 and the Illinois State was a 5-3 win. The next game was against one of the premier programs in the Michigan Wolverines and lost 1-0. So close to a 3-0 start to the 2025 season. The next two games were against Georgia Southern and the Florida Gators. They beat Georgia Southern 7-4 but fell to the Gators 8-0. After the loss to the Gators, the Bulls went on a seven-game winning streak.
The first two wins of the streak came against Florida Gulf Coast. It was a double-header on Wednesday and both games went well. The first one was with a final score of 12-4 and the second was with a final of 5-2. The next games were part of another softball tournament that the Bulls were hosting in the Fonseca Memorial. The tournament started on Valentine’s Day and ended on the 16th. The Bulls played two games and their opponents were Penn State and Loyala-Chicago. They defeated the Nittany Lions 12-4 and beat Loyala-Chicago 9-1. They had two games the first one came against St. Johns in which they won 5-0. On that same day, they played Loyola-Chicago crushing them 13-1 and the next day were playing in the finals. The Bulls beat Penn State 1-0 and won the tournament.
USF Baseball
The USF baseball team started a new era with Mitch Hannahs. He took over as head coach after Billy Mohl was let go after the Bulls had a sub-par 2024 season. In that season, they failed to make the AAC Tournament. On the same day, the USF softball team was cooking getting two wins on Valentine’s Day hosting the Iowa Hawkeyes for the first of a three-game series. In this series, USF got off to a good start winning the game 5-4 but fell in the Saturday afternoon game 8-2. They concluded the series with a morning game and beat Iowa 9-5 starting the season with a 2-1 record. One of the bigger games of the season came on the 18th against ranked Florida State Seminoles. The Bulls struggled and fell to the Seminoles dropping their record to 1-13-1 all-time with a 6-2 final score.
This has been an exciting week and start for these respective programs. This an exciting because all three teams are off to good starts. For lacrosse and baseball, it’s new because the program getting off to a new start and baseball has a new coach. The softball team has been consistent no matter what let’s see how the rest of the month goes for these teams.
