BROOKLINE, Mass. \u00a0\u2013<\/strong>\u00a0The UMass Lowell baseball team had a chance in the final inning, but Northeastern held on for the 4-2 victory in non-conference action on Tuesday afternoon.<\/p>\n Entering the ninth with a trail of 4-1, the River Hawks (18-23) had runners on second and third with no out, but could only plate one on a\u00a0Joey Castellanos<\/a><\/dfn>\u00a0(Nutley, N.J.) sacrifice fly. Down to the final out, UMass Lowell had the tying run at the plate but could not extend the contest.<\/p>\n Russ Olive<\/a><\/dfn>\u00a0(Chelmsford, Mass.) brought in the visitors’ first run on a single in the eighth to give pick up his 33rd RBI of the season.<\/p>\n After five inning, the Huskies (27-13) took a 2-0 lead off a pair of sacrifice flies in the first and fifth frames. The hosts were looking for a big inning in the first, but\u00a0Colby Maiola<\/a><\/dfn>\u00a0(North Reading, Mass.) made a diving catch in the gap to force the sacrifice.<\/p>\n UMass Lowell had at least a runner on base in four of the first five innings, but could not break through onto the scoreboard. In the second, the visitors drew back-to-back walks and had a runner on third in the fifth, but both one-out threats were extinguished.<\/p>\n Northeastern’s decisive run came in the sixth on single after a stolen base in the frame, and the hosts added insurance on another base knock in the seventh.<\/p>\n Kendall Pomeroy<\/a><\/dfn>\u00a0(Shrewsbury, Mass.) kept the River Hawks in the game after entering the sixth with two on and no outs, retiring the next three batters to keep the deficit at 3-0.\u00a0Brian Dolan<\/a><\/dfn>\u00a0(Lowell, Mass.) pitched a perfect inning of relief, striking out all three batters he faced.<\/p>\n UMass Lowell continues the road swing with an America East series at UAlbany on May 5-6.<\/p>\n
