NBA Playoff Picture – Who Will Usurp the Warriors for Throne?

The NBA Finals, East vs. West, is what many pay to see, though the real battle is in the East. For the last twenty years or so, the Western Conference Finals has often been hailed as the “real” finals, as the winner of this hard-fought, intense playoff series tends to win the NBA Championship (it’s been that way since the late great Kobe Bryant completed the alley-oop pass to Shaquille O’Neal in Game 7 of the 2000 Western Conference Finals). This year, however, the West has been a total shitshow. You have MVP frontrunner Nikola Jokic (who somehow has more goddamn MVPs than Shaq or Kobe which is insane to me) and his Denver Nuggets, but even they aren’t a complete lock.

I mean seriously, who’s to say Denver is for sure going to beat the defending champion Golden State Warriors or the Phoenix Suns led by Kevin Durant? They’re the default favorites sure, but I’m not putting all my chips on the table for them like I would the Milwaukee Bucks or Boston Celtics. Yup, the East is where the true power lies as of now. But of course, in the playoffs, almost anything’s possible. A healthy Bucks team could probably take anyone, but maybe a Boston Celtics team featuring Malcolm Brogdon has just enough juice this time around. Is Jayson Tatum THAT guy though? He’s awesome, but he and Jaylen Brown playing essentially the same position may hurt them yet again (no Andrew Wiggins this time around though, instead it may be KD).

While I don’t see the Warriors going back-t0-back, I wouldn’t completely count them out. I also wouldn’t count out the Los Angeles Lakers, who’ve been considered a joke for a season and a half in favor of a staked Clippers team within the same arena (Crypto.com still sounds so stupid), who have a healthy LeBron James returning to a lineup featuring a determined Anthony Davis. I do think KD and the Suns have the firepower this season, but I still don’t think whatever happens in the West will determine who the winner is like in past years. I think it’s the Bucks’ title to lose, with Giannis having the opportunity to really establish himself in the GOAT conversation. The NBA playoffs, where amazing happens…
