The USA Baseball U13 National Team Championships held its final day this Monday. Half of the teams competed in a tournament to determine which squads would medal. It was Sonoma California’s Stacked Baseball that would end up as the champions of the tournament against SBA Marucci. Their tournament win is especially impressive after making it through a tough and grueling playoff schedule.
Stacked Baseball’s path to the chip
Stacked Baseball entered the tournament as the 6th seed and had themselves a matchup against the 3rd seeded USA Prime National. Their game with USA Prime National came down to a wire with Stacked Baseball holding a slim 1-0 lead going into the 7th inning. They put up 3 runs in the final inning to pull away from USA Prime National. Joshua Priest had a nice 3-hit game to propel the team to a matchup with the undefeated Dirtbags in the semifinals.
In their matchup with the undefeated Dirtbags, Stacked Baseball once again took a slim one-run lead into the final inning. They would again put up 3 runs in the 7th to give themselves a 6-2 lead. Stacked Baseball was the first to hand the Dirtbags a defeat in this tournament. Unluckily for the dirtbags, it was the game that kept them from reaching the gold medal match.
Championship
Their competitor SBA Marucci had a tense tournament as well with close one-run wins against Canes National and Kangaroo Court American. Against Kangaroo Court American, SBA Marucci walked into the 7th inning with a one-run lead but KCA staged a comeback to take their own one-run lead. Thanks to a big strikeout by SBA Marucci relief pitcher Witt McCammon, the damage ended there. SBA Marucci managed to load the bases with no outs. They tied the game up off of a wild pitch to tie it up. John Hucko would walk it off on a single to take SBA Marucci to the gold medal match.
Fresh off of his relief appearance, Witt McCammon started for SBA Marucci against Stacked Baseball’s Aidan Kent. Joshua Priest would make the first punch of the game with a 2-run inside-the-park homer. Stacked Baseball would tack on another run in the third when Ayden Coleman found his way through a pickle. They would solidify a tournament gold with a huge 5-run fifth inning. After putting up 2 runs in the next inning, they created an insurmountable 10-1 lead that forced the execution of a mercy rule.
