Boston Red Sox News and Notes: Finding Any Way to Win

This season, the Boston Red Sox have proven that they should not be counted out if they are behind in a game. Not only do they have one of the best records in the MLB, but they also have the most comeback wins of any team. Of the Red Sox’s 63 wins so far, 33 have been comebacks. The team has a mindset that they won’t give up and can come back from any run deficit. This way of thinking has contributed to many dramatic wins for the Red Sox, where they take the lead late into their games, often in the seventh, eighth, or ninth inning.

Good hitting and a reliable bullpen have both been crucial to the team’s comeback success. Many of the players, including Kiké Hernández, Rafael Devers, and Xander Bogaerts, have had clutch hits and have been able to string their extra-base hits together to score the most runs possible. Bullpen pitchers such as Matt Barnes, Josh Taylor, and Garrett Whitlock have successfully performed under pressure, holding their opponents after the Red Sox have taken the lead. This combination has helped the Red Sox stay strong in later innings, no matter what happens earlier in the game.

Perhaps the most exciting display of their comeback success came this past weekend in their game against the New York Yankees. The Boston Red Sox were being no-hit by Yankees pitcher Domingo Germán through the seventh inning, but they did not let that stop them. Alex Verdugo hit a double to lead off the eighth inning. His hit was followed by a double from Hunter Renfroe, a single from Christian Vázquez, a single from Franchy Cordero, and a double from Kiké Hernández. Their five consecutive hits, which were the team’s only hits in the game, scored three runs and made the score 4-3. Kevin Plawecki tied the game with an RBI groundout, and Hernández scored the leading run on an RBI sac fly by Xander Bogaerts. The Red Sox ended up winning 5-4.

This comeback was especially interesting because the Yankees played the Boston Red Sox the night before and scored four runs in the eighth inning to come back and ultimately win 4-3. This makes Boston’s win even more impressive because they were able to bounce back from a loss as well as being no-hit for seven innings. With many upcoming games against American League East competition, it will be important for the Red Sox to keep their determined mindset and never give up. Continuing to rebound and win close games will be key to remaining in first place.
