HOUSTON – HBU’s Jared Moon has resigned as head baseball coach after 16 seasons at the helm of his alma mater, Director of Athletics Steve Moniaci announced Tuesday.

“After 24 years of coaching, including 16 as head coach, I have decided to step down as the head coach of the HBU Huskies,” Moon said. “HBU will always hold a special place in my heart as a player, alum, and coach. I hold so many dear memories of HBU baseball, such as the NAIA World Series in 1997, being inducted into the Hall of Honor in 2008, multiple conference championships, an NCAA Regional in 2015, and, most recently, 401 wins.

“I am forever grateful to Coach Ron Cottrell for hiring me in 1997 as an assistant, then as the head coach in 2005. I am now going to focus on my family and my daughter, who is in the prime of her high school years playing volleyball, as well as helping my wife with her national health coaching business.”

After sweeping a doubleheader against Southeastern Louisiana on Friday, Moon finishes his HBU career with 401 wins and is the all-time winningest baseball coach in Huskies history. He won the Red River Athletic Conference Championship in 2006 and led the Huskies to an NAIA World Series berth in 2007. After transitioning to Division I, HBU won the Great West Conference Tournament championship in 2013 and the Southland Conference Tournament title in 2015. Moon was an assistant from 1997-2005, winning six Red River Athletic Conference championships, and played catcher at HBU from 1993-95.

“Jared has done a tremendous job with the HBU baseball program and reached a milestone with his 400th win this past weekend,” Moniaci said. “Under his leadership, Huskies baseball has won numerous conference championships, including an NCAA Regional appearance after winning the Southland title in only our second year in the league. We are grateful for Jared’s time as head baseball coach at HBU and honor his decision to spend more time with his family.”

All 42 Huskies who have played professional baseball have either played with or for Moon, including Addison Russ (’17), who is currently at AAA Scranton-Wilkes Barre with the Yankees, and Trevor Enders, who became the first HBU player to appear in a Major League game with the Rays in 2000.

HBU will commence a national search for its next head coach immediately.
