The Yankees, Bama football, and San Antonio Spurs have all thrived historically. This feat has placed them in the discussion of historical dominance. The Longhorns men’s golf team also belongs in this discussion. Because like the pro franchises mentioned, they have dominated their sport for a long time. A very very long time. Today, we look at the Texas Longhorns golf team.
In 1927, the men’s golf program was established. Since 1927, Texas has won multiple national championships and produced several successful pro players. Jordan Spieth, Tom Kite, Ben Crenshaw, and Lenoard Brooks all wore burnt orange and white. Historically, Ed White, Wes Ellis, and Buck Luce played for the school.
White, Kite, and Crenshaw all won individual titles. Over 30 individual golfers have won a conference title on 39 different occasions. Talk about total dominance. The Yankees have won 27 championships and 40 AL pennants. Bama football claims 18 national titles and has won 32 conference titles. The Spurs have five championships, six conference titles, and 22 division titles.
The easiest way to measure a team’s dominance is via accolades. The Longhorns are able to measure up with dominant teams in other sports. Plus a list of notable players has represented them. When it comes to the coaching they remain in the conversation. Harvey Penick is as legendary as Joe Torre, Bear Bryant, or even Popovich. The Hall of Famer won 21 conference championships, a PGA Teacher of the Year award, and became a best-selling writer. His book, Harvey Penick’s Little Red Book, became the highest-selling golf book ever.
Even non-sports fans have worn a Yankee hat. Bama football and the Spurs are also iconic. All three teams feature iconic uniforms. The University of Texas at Austin logo is one of the most well-known logos. Plus the Hook ’em Horns hand gesture is universal. Meaning the argument for the men’s golf team remaining in the conversation is still strong.
Legendary feats are arguably the most exciting part of sports. At any second something memorable could happen. These moments become noteworthy entries in the minds of the people that witness them. Ruth called his shot, Tua made a deep throw, and Ginóbili swatted a bat with his hand during a game. On the golf course, the Longhorns also have iconic moments. In the 1971 NCAA championship Crenshaw produced a four-day score of 273. A record that remained for 21 years.
Regardless of the criteria, the list of legendary sports teams should include the men that golf in burnt orange. Dominance in any sport is iconic. Especially when a sport is super difficult such as golf. The greatest sports team debate will never be resolved. However, it is clear that Austin features one of them.
