In today’s age streaming is more popular than ever. In fact, various media outlets have entered the space. This trend has had a major influence on the sports world. Various leagues have benefited from the trend. Simultaneously, college athletes will soon be able to make money. Both trends could end up benefiting the University of Texas football.

Historically Texas has had success recruiting. However, in the last several years other schools have begun achieving similar success. Alabama is arguably the best example. Nick Saban has demonstrated a strong ability to recruit. He has a bunch of championship rings but his school doesn’t have its own network.

The Longhorn Network was established in 2011. Like the name suggests it focuses on the school’s sports teams. People sometimes utter the phrase chess not checkers. Creating the Longhorn Network was an impressive chess move. Thanks to the upcoming NCAA rule changes the move will be more impressive than ever.

Attention is a valuable commodity. Money and attention are even more desirable. Many schools will soon be able to provide both. This opportunity is due to the shift towards letting collegiate athletes make money. In order to provide the desired assets schools are utilizing different strategies.

Notre Dame somewhat recently began strategically placing billboards depicting their players. Billboard advertising can attract attention. However, even more people are paying attention to electronic screens. A lot of people own electronic devices. In fact, some of those people are college recruits. The Longhorn network will enable the school to attract the attention of these recruits.

Digital advertising is an effective form of communication. Many schools have utilized it to promote themselves. These random ads are cool but they arguably lack the firepower of an entire network. Texas University doesn’t have that problem. They might not win a title every year, but they are capable of winning in the world of branding.

Winning championships often motivates athletes. Playing for the University of Texas may win you a championship. In the long term, it could enable you to achieve a more important goal. Former Longhorn, Kevin Durant, has had a lot of success off the court. The successful investor is making a name for himself in the financial world. The Longhorn Network could enable recruits to begin to build their own personal brand.

Coach Sarkisian is used to maneuvering offensive weapons. He has had access to many of them over the years. However, the Longhorn Network isn’t a random weapon. It’s a modern-day death star. If the school can figure out how to use it correctly it will be a game-changer. OU and every other school should be scared. They can sign whatever media rights deal they want. It won’t matter because the Longhorns have a weapon that will enable them to win the recruiting war.
