
THIBODAUX, La. – HBU scored all six of its runs in the eighth inning, as the Huskies rallied past Nicholls, 6-2, to earn a split of the Southland Conference series Sunday afternoon at Ray E. Didier Field.
Senior right fielder Brandon Bena went 1-for-4 with a home run and three RBIs, while sophomore first baseman Brennen Bales went 3-for-4 and scored a run. Sophomore catcher Dawson Woods was 2-for-4 with an RBI and a run and junior second baseman Jake Miller was 1-for-5 with an RBI and a run for the Huskies (5-18, 3-9 SLC).
Sophomore right-hander Jared Burch (1-0) earned the win, allowing one run on one hit with seven strikeouts and a walk in four innings. Junior starter Andrew Reitmeyer gave up one run on one hit with three strikeouts and two walks in four innings, while sophomore Morris Austin closed out the game with a perfect ninth, striking out one.
Dillon Belle provided the only offense for Nicholls, going 2-for-3 with a pair of solo home runs. No one else in the Colonels’ lineup had a hit.
Nick Heckman (1-2) took the loss, allowing three runs, two earned, on seven hits with four strikeouts and a walk in 7.1 innings. Beau Balado allowed two runs on two hits to the only batters he faced.
Belle homered in the bottom of the second, then again in the bottom of the fifth as the Colonels took a 2-0 lead into the eighth.
Freshman shortstop Sebastian Trinidad reached on an error to lead off the eighth, then junior Todd Jackson followed with a pinch-hit single, before being lifted for pinch-runner junior Parker Wayne. Miller came through with an RBI single, then Balado came in and Woods delivered an RBI single up the middle to tie the game, 2-2. Bena then blasted a three-run home run to left to put the Huskies on top. Bales kept the rally going with a single, then scored when senior Matt Solomon reached on an error.
The HBU Huskies return home to host Lamar in a four-game league series Thursday through Saturday at Husky Field.
