HBU Baseball Edges Nicholls in Series Opener, 5-4

THIBODAUX, La. – HBU sophomore first baseman Brennen Bales tied the game with a three-run home run in the sixth, then senior right fielder Brandon Bena drove in the go-ahead run twice as the Huskies outlasted Nicholls, 5-4, in the Southland Conference baseball series opener Friday night at Ray E. Didier Field.

Bales went 3-for-4 with a home run and three RBIs, while Bena went 2-for-3 with a home run, a double, two RBIs, and two runs for the Huskies (4-16, 2-7 SLC). Sophomore catcher Dawson Woods, freshman shortstop Sebastian Trinidad and senior centerfielder Chase Talbot each went 2-for-4.

Sophomore righthander Morris Austin (2-0) picked up the victory, holding the Colonels scoreless and hitless over the final two innings, striking out three and walking three. Junior lefthander Austin Spinney took a no-decision, allowing three runs, two earned, on five hits with four strikeouts and four walks in seven innings.

Wes Toups went 1-for-3 with a home run, two RBIs, and scored twice for Nicholls (9-11, 6-3), while Dane Simon went 1-for-3 with a walk, a stolen base, and drove in a run.

Joe Taylor (0-3) took the loss, allowing an unearned run on one hit and striking out two in one inning of work. Starter Chase Gearing gave up three runs on six hits with six strikeouts and three walks in 5.2 innings.

The Colonels broke a scoreless tie in the bottom of the fourth when Toups led off with a solo home run to rightfield. Nicholls scored two more in the fifth on a sacrifice fly by Toups and an HBU error to extend the lead to 3-0.

In the top of the sixth, Bena ripped a two-out double to right-center, then senior left fielder Lane Botkin was hit by a pitch and Bales blasted a three-run home run to left to tie the game, 3-3.

The Huskies took their first lead of the game when Bena led off the eighth with a solo shot down the leftfield line, but the Colonels answered back to tie in the bottom half as Toups scored on Simon’s RBI groundout.

Woods led off the ninth with a double down the rightfield line, pinch-runner Christian Dumont took third on a passed ball, then scored on Bena’s sacrifice fly to put the Huskies ahead, 5-4.

The series continues with a doubleheader Saturday at 3 p.m., followed by Sunday’s 2 p.m. finale.
