Just one football season ago there was a ton of uncertainty at Fred G Grace field regarding the Allegany-Limestone Gators football squad. The question was, how much longer would Paul Furlong dictate the team and get nowhere close to playoff football? Furlong knew it was time for a change and headed for an assistant job at a different school. Talk then buzzed about rather or not the structural and cultural changes would be enough; the answer is it is a breath of fresh air for parents, players, and students alike. For the first time in nearly a decade, things are looking good and fans are optimistic.
As always, the student section has been packed in Allegany, but for the first time in the same decade, they are re-energized and loud. Players are confident that they have enough to beat each opponent they face. It all started on opening night of the 2019 season.
The boys in green and black came running out jumping up and down. The red, white, and blue of America were hoisted high by a player they then huddled with the flag in the center of the Gators. The kickoff came from quarterback and defender Tom Callen and the decibels were certainly high in the student section.
The team did fairly well playing against the teams that they were able to play with. The boss is doing a fantastic job taking baby steps and getting not just the Varsity squad but even the Junior Varsity system to buy-in.
Getting your guys to buy in translates to playoff football and Allegany-Limestone is oh so close. Beating Fredonia, Gowanda, and Cassadaga Valley has put them at 3-2 in league play. The next matchup is the final home contest, and for the senior leaders such as Callen, it is the next to last regular-season game of their careers. However, if they can win one more game I will be amazed if they do not make the push.
