The conference schedule has begun. The road to the America East tournament is underway. Here is what is happening.

Stony Brook and Vermont had a very good non-conference season. In fact, their combined win total of 22 is the third most for a mid-major conference tandem. Both schools got off to good starts in the league as well posting wins last Saturday.

The Seawolves continued to climb up the collegeinsider.com Mid-Major Top 25 poll. This week they sit at #16. Their eight road wins are the most in the country. Stony Brook, for the most part, has played close games. Only two of their thirteen wins have been by more than ten points. And since Jeff Bolas has become the head coach, the Seawolves have been excellent at closing games out. They are 37-3 when tied or ahead with two minutes to play.

Vermont has won eight of its last nine games, and with their win on the road at Albany, the Catamounts are eight and one in last nine league openers. They finish up non-conference play with 10 wins for the third straight year

Things are not going so well for UNH, the Wildcats are off to a rough start at 2-12. Even worst is the fact that they have not registered a win against a division one program yet this year. They hope to change that when they host UMass Lowell on Wednesday night trying to snap an eleven game losing streak. They finally got it done and recorded their first win against a D1 opponent in the win over UMass-Lowell.

after getting off to a 3-7 start, the Hartford Hawks have picked things up recently having won four of their last five games. This includes a New Year’s Eve victory at Boston College. The win over the Eagles was the second in the last three years.

The UMass Lowell Riverhawks enjoy playing early afternoon games. They are six and one when playing earlier and having the lead at halftime.

There are Co-Players of the week again in America East. Vermont”s Anthony Lamb was named for the fourth time this year and for his career. The Junior averaged 18.5 points, nine rebounds, three and a half blocks in two wins last week.  He also became the 39th Catamount to reach one thousand points in his career. Lamb reached that mark last Wednesday night going for 21 points, 14 rebounds, and six blocks. In a 73-59 win over the Dartmouth Big Green, Lamb followed that up with a 16 points, four rebound performance in Vermont’s league opener against Albany.

J.R Lynch of Hartford was also named the player of the week. He scored a career-high 26 points in the Hawks win at Boston College. Lynch also grabbed four boards and had two assists. This is the senior’s first career honor.

For the fifth time this year, Sam Sessoms of Binghamton is the freshman of the week. Sessoms averaged 23 points, and four assists in two games last week. Sessoms shot 57 percent from the field (16-for-28) including eight for twelve from the three-point line. He dropped 21 in last Saturday’s home win over UNH.
