Welcome to Against All Odds: NCAA/NFL Picks Week 3! From the opening weekend of the NCAA football season through Super Bowl LII, Mike Drakulich (PSN), the man behind Pittsburgh SportsNation, takes on his father, Michael J. Drakulich (MJD), in picking NCAA and NFL games against the Vegas spread.

Mike Drakulich covers both the Pittsburgh Steelers and Pitt Panthers during the season for NGSCSports.com!

To appease the taste buds of Pittsburgh’s local coverage area, Pitt, Penn State, and West Virginia, when they are playing, will always be on the docket among the NCAA games chosen, as will the Pittsburgh Steelers for NFL games.

Once Bowl Season arrives, we’ll bring you EVERY Bowl Game and then continue throughout the conclusion of the NFL Playoffs.

Itchy vs Scratchy. Black Spy vs White Spy. Cheers vs Gary’s Old Towne Tavern. History is full of rivalries, but none are better than father vs son! Who will rise above the other this season and become the 2018-19 Against All Odds Champion?

Well, as brutal a week it was for both Pitt and the Steelers, both myself and my dad joined in the misery by both going 1-4 on the week. Things were looking good in the first half for us in the Pitt game before a few idiotic coaching decisions, as did the outlook with the Steelers, who held a 14 point lead with seven minutes left…and THE BALL vs Cleveland. Would’ve thought that the Chargers would lay an egg, as did Green Bay for three quarters against the Bears???

That’s life, as Sinatra said, and we all have to move on and learn from our mistakes.

Five games on the slate this week, with West Virginia missing as their game vs North Carolina State is postponed due to Hurricane Florence.

If you happen to be reading this column in the Hurricane Warning Area, please stay safe and our prayers are with you for your families and homes.

NCAA Football

Saturday, September 15th

Kent State Golden Flashes (1-1) at #11 Penn State Nittany Lions (2-0), 12:00 pm | Line: Penn State -34.5

Pick- PSN: Penn St | MJD: Penn St

Penn State heads home with a chance to run the score up vs Kent State this week.

Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets (1-1) at Pitt Panthers (1-1), 12:30 pm | Line: Georgia Tech -3.5

Pick- PSN: Pitt | MJD: Pitt

It’s this year’s version (35 seasons in a row it seems) of which Pitt team is going to show up when Georgia Tech and their vaunted triple-option rushing attack invade Heinz Field this Saturday afternoon. As bad as the score looked vs Penn State, the stats said otherwise. Bad decisions, turnovers, and extremely poor field position destroyed Pitt in the 2nd half, of what was a close game at half. By all accounts, Pitt, at worst, should have been up 13-7 at half. But, when you miss extra points, make-able field goals, fumble punts, and have dumb coaching, you get a 14-6 Penn State lead instead. Pitt will bounce back vs a team that saw South Florida lay 49 on them the same day in a loss.

#12 LSU Tigers (2-0) at #7 Auburn Tigers (2-0), 3:30 pm | Line: Auburn -9.5

Pick- PSN: LSU | MJD: LSU

Two rivals, both highly ranked, meet up with early rights to the SEC West Division Title on the line. Hard to see LSU escaping this one with a win, but they will keep this under double digits at worst.

NFL

Sunday, September 16th

Kansas City Chiefs (1-0) at Pittsburgh Steelers (0-0-1), 1:00 pm | Line: Pittsburgh -3.5

Pick- PSN: Pittsburgh | MJD: Pittsburgh

The Steelers were seemingly on their way to another easy win vs Cleveland when all of the penalties and turnovers buried them into a 21-21 tie with the Browns. I get that is was a monsoon, but I’m not one for excuses. You simply do not blow 14 point leads with seven minutes left against anyone, let alone the Browns. I expect a much sharper and focused Ben Roethlisberger and Steelers when the Chiefs take the field at 1:00 pm this Sunday at Heinz Field.

Oakland Raiders (0-1) at Denver Broncos (1-0), 4:25 pm | Line: Denver -5.5

Pick- PSN: Denver | MJD: Oakland

Denver looked pretty good last week with Case Keenum at quarterback and now get a Raiders team that was shredded to bits by the Rams. I like the Broncos to be able to cover, especially playing at home.
