NFL: Do owners profit off fined players?

As tensions continue between the players and owners in the NFL, why is it only the players shouldering the blame?

While the NFL is no stranger to controversy as of late, there is only more on the way. However, only a portion of the entire league is taking the hit. Which portion is that? Bingo! The players. Unfortunately, the NFL is horrible at keeping secrets and one of the worst kept secrets is how the NFL owners get away with stuff.

Quite frankly, it is rare to see an owner get fined for something. While all the focus is on the players, what about the guys that employ them? Right, we as fans tend to forget the about the guys that own the teams. As a matter of fact, it’s normal. After all, they aren’t the guys putting in the work on the field.

But let’s take a step back and talk about something. How is it that the product on the field is getting penalized at such at a high rate? First and foremost, yes, there are some boneheads in the NFL. Yes, I’m referring to the Richie Incognitos and Ray Rices of the world. However, certain players get fined for simply expressing themselves. Why is that?

Take a look at the NBA for example. Allen Iverson paved the way for modern basketball players to dress as they please. It’s called expressing who you are. Adam Silver seems to understand that. But why can’t the NFL do the same? Players get fined for wearing tribute gear with the uniforms, or even exercising their first amendment rights. What’s up with that? Football is in a very strange place these days.

Unfortunately, the NFL finds itself battling against the new and hip NBA. A league where acceptance is vital to their integrity and branding. Football has been more of the macho sport if you will. The NFL is the league that imposes itself on its players. At times, suffocating them and in rare cases, isolating guys. For example, Colin Kaepernick. Sadly, Kap became the NFL’s scapegoat, and in other ways, the poster boy for the ongoing battle the league faces.

It’s a sad reality the NFL must live with right now. But if changes are expected, you’re sadly mistaken. The NFL has to take a long look at itself in the mirror. For the owners, they get their money regardless. But why should the product suffer for the league’s inability to change? It’s a leaguewide issue that needs some serious reexamining. However, will the NFL do it? Because honestly, it feels like the NFL is falling behind, and fast. While the ratings are still there to back up the revenue, the numbers also show fewer fans tuning in.

Meanwhile, basketball continues to go up every year and soccer continues its grip on global sports as well. So where does football go from here? For starters, it must stop using its own players as scapegoats. Allow them to have their form of expressing themselves.  Of course, if a player steps way out of line, fine them. However, fining them for simply exercising their rights as citizens is just sad.

Owners, step up and support your players, despite what you may believe in. Get to know them, support them and build them into better men. Don’t simply shut them out and allow your wallet to grow at their expense.
