It Starts Here

Although the score may not show it, that was possibly one of the best opening quarters of Indiana Fever basketball I have seen in awhile.  The Fever opened the scoring for the game. The team was aggressive, they stayed on the ball, and they hit 100 percent of their free throws in the first quarter.  Candice Dupree was the real winner of the first quarter with eight points. Victoria Vivians was not too far behind with seven points of her own.

Change in Momentum

Last night was Cappie Pondexter’s home starting debut with the Fever.  She was off to a slow start in the first quarter, but fans saw a huge improvement by halftime. Pondexter was the high scorer for the Fever with seven points in the second quarter and played the most minutes with just over 15.  The team as a whole had a momentum change in the second quarter with their bench picking up eight points and the Fever taking the lead.  A layup from Dupree gave the Fever the lead, which was her twelfth point of the game. The Fever had a collective 19 rebounds by the end of the first half and they made 100 percent of their free throws

Mercury Takeover

When the third quarter came around, the Phoenix Mercury hit another level and scored 30 points. The Fever bench only scored one more point than the Mercury bench did. Vivians did not put any points on the board, but Dupree put up nine points by herself.  Unfortunately, Brittney Griner scored ten points and Diana Taurasi put up nine points. That being said, the Fever really needed Vivians to step up that quarter. Although Vivians did not play the full quarter, Pondexter did not either yet she still put up six points.

Not a Hot Ending

The fourth quarter provided no relief for the Fever.  The Fever’s starters only put up four points. It was Kelsey Mitchell who proved to be the greatest help for her team. She scored four points and made both of her free throws. Cappie Pondexter went one for five in the paint, and Candice Dupree was zero for four.  Brittney Griner was still a dominating force for the Mercury with another ten points and making all of her field goals. This is never a score Fever fans want to see, but it is good to see that over 6,000 people still showed up for last night’s game.
