New York Penn League News & Notes

Another week and another edition of NYPL notes. Here is what’s going on this week.

Mahoning Valley pitcher Luis Oviedo is at the top of the league in a pitching category this week as he leads in strikeouts with 40, is second in innings pitched at 28, leads in WHIP at .68, and in average at .144. Oviedo is one of three pitchers to have a perfect record of 3-0 at this point of the season.

State College starting pitcher Angel Rondon, is the leader in innings pitched with 29 so far. He also leads in total batters faced at 121, and in at-bats against with 110. He has allowed two sacrifice hits in his 29 innings of work. Rondon is also tied for the most losses in the league at four.

The Lowell Spinners have gotten some good work from Rio Gomez out of their bullpen. Gomez possesses the best lowest batting average out of the pen in the league at .086 (three hits in 35 at-bats). Gomez is third in lowest BB-IBB/ 9IP Ratio at 0.84 (one in 10.2 IP).

On offense, the Spinners are being led these days by Jarren Duran. His .347 batting average is second in the league. He is first in triples with six, leads in total bases with 44, and is tied for second in hits with 26. However, stealing bases is not something Duran has caught on to just yet. He is tied with four other players in caught stealing with three.

Tri-City’s Gilberto Celestino is a fixture in a couple of different categories. He is second in RBI with 16, second in hits with 26, second in stolen bases with 12, and fourth in total bases with 40. Celestino is third in best HR/AB ratio at 1/25.67.

Power is the name of Tri-City’s Emmanuel Valdez’ game, especially with a bat in his hands. He is tied for the lead in home runs with four, is second in doubles with seven, fourth in slugging at .560, and second in runs scored with 17. Valdez leads in extra-base hits with 12.

Hope you enjoyed this week’s look at the New York Penn League. We will be back next week with more news & notes.
