Spinners snap four-game skid

With nine of their next twelve games on the road, Monday night’s matchup vs Hudson Valley was important. For one, Lowell was trying to stop a losing streak that had reached four games. Second, a win would be a good way to start what will be a tough stretch of games.

The Spinners, (10-14) rallied back from being down 6-1 with a five-run third and got six innings of shutout relief from their bullpen. The losing streak is done after a 9 -6 victory over Hudson Valley, (15-9).

Manager Corey Wimberly of the Spinners called the win “real important for our ballclub” and he praised his bullpen for ” being ready to pitch”.

Thaddeus Webb got the start for Lowell on Monday night and he put his team in an immediate hole by giving up back to back home runs on the very first two pitches he threw. Michael Smith and Tanner Dodson both went over the right-field wall for their first long balls of the season. It staked the Renegades to a 2-0 lead before the fans were all in their seats.

Hudson Valley made it 4-0 after two. With runners at second and third, Smith hit a chopping ground ball to second base that Brandon Phillips backed up on and misplayed for a two-run fielding error.

The Spinners got one of those runs back in the bottom of the second. With the base full of Spinners, first baseman Trey Ganns hit into a 4-6-3 double play that scored Kole Cottam to get Lowell on the board at 4-1 Renegades.

Hudson Valley restored their advantage by adding to their lead in the third. Wimberly took Webb out after two ineffective innings of worked (4 hits,4 runs, 2 earned). He brought on Yorvin Pantoja to pitch the third and he would give up a two-run double to right field to Ford Proctor. That would plate Eric Ostberg and Adrain Rondon. Hudson Valley had what looked like a comfortable 6-1 cushion.

On this night, it would seem that no lead would be safe. Lowell would score five times in the bottom of the third. All the runs were charged to Mcgee (three IP,nine hits, eight runs, seven earned, one walk, and two strikeouts). There was an RBI extra-base hit from Michael Chavis, back for a night while the Eastern League is on All-Star break. He doubled to right-center field to drive in one. Devlin Granberg also doubled to score Chavis. After Cottam reached on a fielding error, Tyler Esplin ripped a triple to right-center scoring two runs and Esplin himself would cross home plate on a wild pitch. When the dust cleared, Lowell had tied the game at 6-6.

The Spinners broke the tie for good in the next half-inning. Catcher, Alberto Schmidt led off with a double to right field. Jarren Duran followed with a single to right that sent Schmidt to third. The Renegades made a pitching change and out was Mcgee in was Andrew Gist. He threw a wild pitch to let Schmidt cross the plate then two batters later, Granberg doubled again to right-center to plate Duran.  The Spinners were now ahead 8-6.

Lowell’s bullpen took care of things from there shutting down Hudson Valley over the next six innings. The work of Pantoja, Rio Gomez, and Oddanier Mosqueda were outstanding. They would go a combined seven innings, allowing five hits and two runs, both charged to Pantoja.

The Spinners added one more run on a big fly by Chavis over the wall in right. The home run came in the eighth and made the scored 9-6 Spinners. For Chavis, it was his first as a member of the team.

Pantoja gets the win (1-0), his first in pro ball. Mosqueda gets the save with two innings of shutout ball. The save is his first on the season. The loss goes to Mcgee now (3-1).

After an off day for Lowell, they head out on the road for six straight. The first stop is Auburn to face the Doubledays on Wednesday.
